The study, commissioned by 800 Response of Burlington, Vermont, used separate teams of researchers to survey billboards along major Interstate highways in the greater Philadelphia and San Diego areas. The study found that of the 358 billboards viewed, 30 percent used telephone numbers. More than 70 percent of these were toll-free numbers and of these numbers, almost 80 percent used a vanity number — numbers that spell out words, like 800-BAR-STOOL or 800-NEXTEL9. If an advertiser included a toll-free number on a billboard, the number was prominently displayed more than 80 percent of the time. 2003-06-09
