World Renowned Pakistani Film Journalist and Guitarist of Asian Super-Band Junoon Launches US Premier of New Documentary Muslims in America: Its My Country Too

Salman Ahmad, known as the 'Bono of Asia,' comes to Cambridge, Massachusetts, to open the dialogue about how life in America has changed for Muslim-Americans since September 11, 2001

Boston (PRWEB) September 5, 2005 -- Salman Ahmad, Pakistani rock star and film journalist, will present the US premier screening of his newest documentary film, "Muslims in America: It's My Country Too," Thursday, September 22, 7:30pm, at Harvard Hillel Rosovsky Hall, 52 Mount Auburn Street, Cambridge.

The film reveals the authentic spirit of American Muslims and their experience wrestling with the personal and social consequences of the 9/11 attacks. The event is part of the Voices from the Edge speakers' series sponsored by EnlightenNext. After the film there will be a Q & A session with Ahmad, followed by a reception.

What does it mean today to be Muslim and American?" This is the question that Salman Ahmad set out to answer in his new documentary film, "Muslims in America: It's My Country Too." To do so, he toured the country, asking fellow Muslims what it's like to live in the United States post 9/11.

What he found is that life has changed radically for Muslims since the World Trade Center attacks. Now one out of four Americans view their Muslim co-patriots with suspicion, and many Americans blame the entire Muslim community for what happened on 9/11, says Ahmad. Yet most Muslims in the US, he finds, consider themselves Americans, and proudly so.

Prior to filming Muslims in America, Ahmad's first documentary film, the award-winning 2003 BBC-produced "The Rock Star and the Mullahs," examined Islamic fundamentalism in his native Pakistan. In it, Ahmad challenges extremists' beliefs that all music is evil and should be forbidden by Islamic law. The result is a fascinating look at what may be the most important battle in the world right now, not between radical Islam and the West, but within Islam itself. The fourteen-hundred-year-old religion has hit a crossroads. Being pulled apart by the tensions between a movement toward modernity and the insistence on a strict interpretation of Islamic law, Islam's moderates and extremists are vying for influence and power in this ancient tradition.

Ahmad, who is a practicing Muslim in the Sufi tradition, is much more than a celebrated musician. With his rock-star good looks, down-to-earth humanity, and disarming charisma, he has a unique ability to speak to both moderates and extremists and directly challenge their views while respecting the essence of their faith. The result makes for an unusual view into the real human struggles that are shaping contemporary Islam.

As a Muslim American, Salman has broken free of the trappings of his own culture and is questioning so much within it—often at great risk to himself—in order to end the volatile clash between modern and traditional civilizations," says Morgan Dix, co-director of Voices from the Edge. His willingness to question his own assumptions creates space for others to question theirs."

This is why we invited him to participate in our international speakers series. Our mission is to presents thought-leaders and visionaries from all walks of life who challenge their audience to stretch beyond familiar ways of thinking," says Dix. And I believe Salman is a genuine example of what Voices from the Edge is offering people—a new kind of global thinking that doesnt sacrifice the depth of wisdom in our older traditions yet strives to meet the reality of our contemporary world."

Originally trained as a doctor, Ahmad finished medical school in Pakistan in the early 1990s but decided to test the waters of the musician's life for a year before starting a medical practice. Against all conventional wisdom, he stayed in Pakistan, a country where a local rock-and-roll band was simply an oxymoron. Ten years later, with more than 20 million albums sold, Junoon, which The New York Times dubbed the U2 of Asia," has made history with its homegrown blend of rock-and-roll and spirituality.

Tickets for the screening of "Muslims in America: It's My Country Too" and the reception with Salman Ahmad are $30 online at mktix.com, $35/door and $20 with student ID. Ahmad will also be screening his first documentary "The Rock Star and the Mullahs" followed by Q & A and a reception, Friday, September 23, 7:30pm, at Foxhollow Forum in Lenox, Massachusetts.
