Debbie Reynolds Loans Costumes to Ava Gardner Museum
The Ava Gardner Museum is proud to announce the new exhibit of "Show Boat" memorabilia on loan from Debbie Reynolds' Hollywood Motion Picture Museum.
Smithfield, NC (PRWEB) October 29, 2005 -- Debbie Reynolds’ Hollywood Motion Picture Museum has loaned five costumes and accessories from MGM’s spectacular 1951 production of “Show Boat” to the Ava Gardner Museum in Smithfield, North Carolina.
The five costumes, worn by Ava Gardner, Howard Keel, Kathryn Grayson and the dance team of Marge and Gower Champion, are the centerpiece of an exhibit that was unveiled at the Ava Gardner Festival held October 1. The successful festival included an art faire, live jazz, tours of Gardner’s birthplace and gravesite and free Ava Gardner movies at the historic Howell Theatre, where a young Ava Gardner watched her first movies starring legends such as Clark Gable. The next Ava Gardner Fest is scheduled for September 29-30, 2006.
The “Show Boat” costumes are exquisite examples of the tailoring and dressmaker’s arts from MGM’s famed costume department and designer Walter Plunkett who is best known for his costumes for “Gone with the Wind” and “Singin’ in the Rain.”
"If it were not for the efforts of Debbie Reynolds and her son Todd Fisher to purchase and preserve this huge collection of motion picture memorabilia it would otherwise be lost to future generations,” said Angela Lawson, Executive Director of the Ava Gardner Museum. “We hope to continue to work with Ms. Reynolds to showcase other motion picture artifacts pertaining to Ava Gardner and her co-stars.”
Reynolds’ Hollywood Motion Picture Museum, scheduled to open in 2006, will be located at Belle Island in Pigeon Forge, TN. Once opened to the public, the museum will showcase costumes from “The Wizard of Oz”, some of Marilyn Monroe's wardrobe, including the subway dress from “The Seven Year Itch,” Elizabeth Taylor's jeweled headdress from “Cleopatra,” plus some 3,000 costumes and over 36,000 square feet of props and furniture.
The “Show Boat” costumes will continue to be on display at the Ava Gardner Museum until March 2006. For more information on the “Show Boat” exhibit or the Ava Gardner Museum visit www.avagardner.org. The Ava Gardner Museum is located at 325 East Market Street and open Monday- Saturday, 9:00am-5:00pm and Sunday 2:00pm-5:00pm. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $3 for children.
