A retrospective on the 50th anniversary of the Brooklyn Dodgers World Series Championship is the cover story for the second issue of Gotham Baseball. The special collectors edition looks back at “The Day Brooklyn Won It All.”
New York, NY (PRWEB) November 15, 2005 -- A retrospective on the 50th anniversary of the Brooklyn Dodgers is the cover story for the second issue of Gotham Baseball, which hits the stands this week. The magazine continues to deliver on its mission to look at New York baseball’s past, present, future.
Highlights of the special “The Day Brooklyn Won It All” issue include:
“Now Fifty, Forever Nifty,” by Ed Shakespeare, looks at the glow of the Brooklyn Dodgers’ 1955 championship that refuses to dim.
“A Bronx Tale,” is the debut of Cecilia Tan, author of “The 50 Greatest Games in Yankee History” to a growing list of contributing editors. She takes a look at the losing side of the 1955 World Series, the Yankees.
“Manhattan’s Last Champions,” by Greg W. Prince. A look back at the 1954 New York Giants’ World Series sweep of the Cleveland Indians, the year prior to the Dodgers’ win.
“A Whole New Ballgame,” by Mark Healey. Fifty years later, Brooklyn summer nights are still a thing of magic, because the smell of a stadium hot dog, the crack of the bat and the roar of the crowd have returned the game to a borough that never wanted it to leave in the first place. The Cyclones are a way for Brooklyn baseball fans – old and new – to unite.
“The Hall Isn’t Whole Without Hodges,” by Chip Armonaitis. Considered by many to be the finest fielding right-handed first baseman in the history of baseball, no player has been as close as often and missed election. The column makes the case for Gil Hodges’ induction into the Hall of Fame.
Other articles include a feature on Mets first-baseman Mike Jacobs (“Making an Impression”) and the Yankees 2005 rookie class (“The Kids are all ‘Striped”) In addition, there are standard features including columns “From the Top Step” by Editor-in-Chief Mike McGann and “Going Nine” by Executive Editor Mark Healey, Yankees and Mets organization reports, Gotham Baseball quiz and the Atlantic League Report.
“We were proud of our first effort,” said McGann. “But we feel this issue is better than the first, and that each issue will continue to improve.”
“We will continue to get better as we mature as a magazine, and as we continue to expand the areas we cover,” agreed Healey. “As time goes on, we will cover areas that no other magazine in the area covers, like we did in issue one with the story about the New York Gothams, a team that plays in a league using 1860s rules, in addition to our coverage of all the local teams.”
