Meeting Transcripts Now Available on the 8th Air Force Historical Society of Oregon Web Site
The Eighth Air Force Historical Society of Oregon (8thAFHS) Chapter's web site 8thafhsoregon.com now contains PDF transcripts of the quarterly meetings. The transcripts covers meeting presentations made in years 2002 thru 2006.
(PRWEB) August 10, 2006 -- To assist in historical research concerning combat during World War Two the Oregon 8th Air Force Historical Society (8thAFHS) web site already contains PDFs of original World War II material donated by members. The majority of the material came from servicemen and women who were part of the "Mighty Eighth" Army Air Force strategic bombing campaign against the AXIS powers. These original source materials are invaluable for anyone in their research about missions out of England mainly against targets in France, Germany, Austria, Poland, Norway, Belgium, Holland and Denmark from July 1942 through May 1945.
Material donated to the chapter does not have to be specifically about the 8th Air Force, documents concerning World War Two from both Allied and Axis combatant nations are welcome.
At each quarterly meeting wartime experiences are shared with those present either by a sole presenter or as a part of a panel discussion to educate people about various facets of combat on the ground, sea, and air during World War Two in Europe, North Africa, Pacific as well as some presentations of modern combat experiences in wars since 1945.
Past meetings have covered the Mexican Air Force Squadron 201 in the Pacific, T/SGT Don Malarkey of the 501st PIR of the 101st Airborne Division, F-86 Fighter combat over Korea plus many side conversations of aircraft, combat, tactics, and equipment covering every era.
In the past these presentations were not always recorded. Sometimes a tape recorder was placed next to the speaker and recorded for posterity what they said, but often times at these meetings the experiences of the men and women of WWII were told only to those present and never recorded to any medium. This is a great loss when original material - human experiences - is lost to history. When material is recorded but difficult to be accessed by others due to the location of the material it too is effectively lost to the public.
In order to enable others who do not live in the Beaverton Oregon commuting area; and therefore cannot attend the meetings share and learn from others; transcripts are now routinely taken and posted onto the 8thafhs of Oregon web site http://www.8thafhsoregon.com. To ensure accuracy the meetings are also videotaped and those videotapes are placed on a DVD and are available to be purchased at nominal cost.
Meetings held since 2002 are already posted onto the web site and can be downloaded from http://www.8thafhsoregon.com/meetings/index.aspx . The transcripts are in Adobe PDF® format and can be easily saved locally to your own system. The donated WW II era materials are also saved in PDF format but with a lower resolution for use on the web site. High resolution versions of the documents (300 DPI or higher) in PDF format can be purchased and are contained on a single DVD for $10. (As of August 2006) A complete index of all original material is on the web site.
Videotapes of the past meetings can also be purchased for $10 per meeting.
Those past meetings where tape recordings exist will also be transcribed so that this information will be accessible over the web for the researches to access.
