World’s First Auto Rickshaw Rally to Transverse Southern India this August
The Indian Auto Rickshaw Challenge (IARC), the first endurance rally featuring India’s famous three-wheeled motorized vehicle, will run its debut event starting on August 21 in Chennai , and will end approximately 1,000 kilometers (590 miles) and seven days later in Kanniyakumari, on the southernmost tip of the subcontinent.
Chennai, India; Budapest, Hungary (PRWEB) May 11, 2006 -- The Indian Auto Rickshaw Challenge (IARC), the first endurance rally featuring India’s famous three-wheeled motorized vehicle, will run its debut event this August. The race, which is open to teams of all nationalities, ages and experience levels, will start on August 21 in Chennai (formerly Madras), and will end approximately 1,000 kilometers (590 miles) and seven days later in Kanniyakumari, on the southernmost tip of the Subcontinent. Along the way, participants will enjoy some of India's most scenic routes from the vantage point of South Asia's most beloved form of transport.
IARC competitors will complete daily stages of 150-200 kilometers, making their way through monsoon rains, crowds, uncertain roads and other typically Indian obstacles. Each stage will be opened by a prominent figure, including city mayors and regional celebrities, and several stops will feature unforgettable parties.
The winner of the race will be declared the Auto Rickshaw Rally World Champion.
Another winner will be the children of India, as sponsor proceeds from the rally will benefit local charities fighting child abuse, including the use of underage children for labor.
Auto rickshaws are widely used in India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Bangladesh. They are small, fuel-efficient covered motorcycles with a maximum speed of approximately 55 km/h (about 30 mph) and a normal cruising speed of 35 km/h (22 mph), and usually carrying one driver (or "auto-wallah") and two passengers. For the IARC, it is expected that most teams will be limited to three participants.
The organizer of the IARC will provide rickshaws for competitors, who will have two days to modify and decorate their vehicles. With an auto rickshaw repair shop on nearly every corner of every Indian city and village, repairs during the rally are not likely to be a problem. At the end of the event participants can purchase their rickshaws or return them to the organizers.
The Indian Auto Rickshaw Challenge is being organized by the Adventure Rally Association of Budapest, which earlier this year hosted the first annual Budapest-Bamako Rally, an 8,000-kilometer race from the heart of Central Europe to the heart of West Africa. The IARC promises to be a milestone in global adventure tourism, and an unforgettable experience for participants.
