Little is known about the visual arts outside of Havana, Cuba. Beginning June 8th at Gallery One in San Francisco, there is a one-of-a kind opportunity to broaden cultural awareness of the arts in Cuba through the traveling exhibit, “Beyond the Embargo: Cuban-American Collaborations Works in Clay and on Paper.” This will be the only chance to see these beautiful works of art by prominent Cuban artists in the Bay Area. The exhibit benefits Cuban artists by facilitating links and contacts with international artists, collectors and everyone interested in Cuban Culture.
Curated by Catherine Merrill and Gary Erickson, the exhibit brings together a group of prominent Cuban and American artists with a special emphasis on the flourishing development of Cuban ceramics. “Cuban artists are cross-trained to work in multiple disciplines,” Notes Alberto Lescay, the preeminent Cuban monumental sculptor. “So it is not surprising to see works by the same artists in multiple disciplines. This exhibit is an excellent example of both works on paper and in clay.” “Cuban artists have developed some unique characteristics in their ceramic work because of a need to be flexible with materials,” says Catherine Merrill, one of the show’s curators. “The exhibit includes examples of the Cuban technique of “paper clay” as well as works in stoneware and porcelain.”
In spite of the continuing U.S. embargo against Cuba, the exhibit underscores the power of the universal language of art to break through external differences of nationality, politics, culture and ethnicity. Through art, the creative people of the world can communicate and unite to express generosity, love and goodwill towards one another.
