A small boy and his father drove to the Chukar Cherries home store in Prosser last week and asked if the company would adopt their pet bird which they no longer wanted.

When the company was launched in 1988, the founder chose to align the company’s brand with a Chukar. Originally from Asia, the Chukar Partridge loves to eat Northwest sweet cherries, favors the arid climate and craggy slopes of the Northwest. Uniquely marked with gorgeous vertical barring, this game bird has been described as an aerial speedster as well as the gray racehorse of the canyon lands. It’s notable red beak and legs make it the perfect symbol for Chukar Cherries.

Chukar Cherries is headquartered in the dry, arid climate of the Columbia Valley, an ideal habitat for Chukars and ripe with cherry orchards and vineyards. The new mascot properly named “Cheri” is endeared to the staff and customers. Dave Bender, a longtime associate at Chukar Cherries, designed and built the custom aviary in front of Chukar headquarters in Prosser.
