'A Pleasant View,' Adventure Novel by Kathryn J. S. Long Debuts This Summer
"A Pleasant View," filled with Native American folklore and the simple carefree existence of life in the Allegheny mountains of Pennsylvania, tells an adventurous tale with wisdom and compassion.
Green, OH (PRWEB) June 21, 2006 -- Travel back to 1959, along the Allegheny River in northwestern Pennsylvania, where several hundred Seneca Indians, part of the Seneca Nation, lived in what was known as the Cornplanter Grant. This had been their home for over two hundred years and for many generations. However, in that year a decision was made by the U.S. government to build the Kinzua Dam and Reservoir. A long, bitter court battle had come to an unfavorable end for the Seneca. What followed in the next several years was the tragic relocation of those living along this stretch of the Allegheny, forcing them to find new homes in neighboring towns and cities. The life they had known was ending; their homes now flooded by the Kinzua.
Kathryn Long has created a fictional account surrounding this historic event, bringing to life those people who were blessed enough to have lived here, if only for a brief time. This creative endeavor is a personal quest for the author, since her family has a cabin near the Kinzua. Every summer they traveled to this peaceful setting, every year adding to Kathryn's childhood memories. And it is also to pay homage to the Seneca people who so bravely weathered the challenges of that time. Amidst the controversy, the author tells the story of Suzie, a white girl, and Sam, a Seneca boy, as they try to deal with the prospect of never seeing each other again. They continue to grow a strong connection, almost magical and spiritual, as one escapade after another seems to follow them.
Above all, A Pleasant View is a journey of human struggle and accomplishment, a tale of the human spirit as it grows and survives. Filled with Seneca culture and legend, this adventure gives a rich, lively account of life in the picturesque wilderness of northwestern Pennsylvania.
