The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution Is Pleased to Announce the Induction of Henry Louis Gates into Full Membership

The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (NSSAR) through the diligent efforts of its Massachusetts Society (MASSAR) and special national committee chaired by Joe Dooley of Virginia Society (VASSAR) will induct accomplished professor and author Dr. Henry Louis Gates into full membership.

(PRWEB) July 2, 2006 -- The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (NSSAR) through the diligent efforts of its Massachusetts Society (MASSAR) and special national committee chaired by Joe Dooley of Virginia Society (VASSAR) will induct accomplished professor and author Dr. Henry Louis Gates into full membership. Dr. Gates serves as Chairman of the African and African American Studies program at Harvard University. The induction ceremony will be held on Monday, 10 July 2006 in Dallas, Texas, where the NSSAR will be convened for its 116th annual Congress. In addition to his duties as program chairman, Dr. Gates occupies the role of W.E.B. Dubois Professor of Humanities, and Director of the DuBois Institute for Afro-American Research at Harvard. He is the author of several books and works of literary criticism, and editor of several anthologies. Professor Gates earned his B.A. in English Language and Literature, summa cum laude from Yale University in 1973, and his M.A. and Ph.D. in English Literature from Clare College at the University of Cambridge. Before joining the Harvard faculty in 1991, Dr. Gates had served and taught at Yale, Cornell and Duke Universities. His honors and grants include a MacArthur Foundation "genius grant"(1981), the George Polk Award for Social Commentary (1993), the Chicago Tribune Heartland Award (1994) the Golden Plate Achievement Award (1995), and Time Magazine's "25 Most Influencial Americans" list in 1997. Dr. Gates has also been recognized with the National Humanities medal (1998), and was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1999. It is with deepest regard and honor that the SAR welcomes Dr. Gates as a full member.
