Lonely Planet Adopts Typefi Publishing System

Lonely Planet adopts Typefi Publishing System and boosts book production efficiency 100% in just 12 weeks.

San Jose, Calif. (PRWEB) August 4, 2006 -- Typefi Systems, Inc. today announced Lonely Planet, the world’s leading independent travel guide publisher, has completed the first phase of its implementation of Typefi’s automated publishing solution, resulting in an immediate boost in production efficiency.

Lonely Planet publishes over 200 new titles each year and has been using Adobe Creative Suite and Adobe InDesign software since the start of 2006, enhancing publishing accuracy and decreasing the publishing process time. The next step involved moving to the Typefi Publishing System where the gains have been even more significant.

Typefi is enabling us to produce 20% more titles with existing staffing levels, and this is during a very busy period
“Just eight weeks after implementing the Typefi Publishing System we have seen a 100% improvement in page layout efficiency,” said Andrew Tudor, Production Services Manager at Lonely Planet. “Lonely Planet also chose Typefi Publishing System because of its ability to easily integrate with our existing workflow and systems.”

Over the next few months Lonely Planet intends to complete the roll-out to more than 80 editors and 20 designers.

“Typefi is enabling us to produce 20% more titles with existing staffing levels, and this is during a very busy period” said Neil Campbell, Lonely Planet’s Program Director. “As we complete the implementation we are looking at significantly increasing these numbers yet again.”

Typefi’s software acts as a layer on top of Microsoft Word and Adobe InDesign, providing standard application sets to content creators and layout designers. Linking the two are a series of client/server tools and plug-ins that translate content to XML, map it to a repository, and provide very high-speed automated page layout to a pre-prepared design template.

Typefi’s software also reduces revision cycles thanks to a web-based interface, allowing authors, designers and editors to work collaboratively on projects, while all content and design elements are stored in an XML-based repository, simplifying the republishing and repurposing of content. All content is synchronized from the source documents to the XML content, and back from the final InDesign pages. Typefi Publish also offers a fast return on investment thanks to its patented page layout, scriptless template design, and high-speed throughput of up to 15,000 pages per hour.

"We have been very pleased with the success of the Lonely Planet implementation," said Chandi Perera, Typefi’s VP of Professional Services. "It took just eight weeks and the results were immediate. On top of that they have been able to use existing tools, minimizing retraining, and we were able to customize the solution to specifically suit their needs.”

Typefi Publishing System comes in two flavors: Typefi Print for centralized XML-based document production, and Typefi Publish for workgroup collaboration around complex document and book production.
