Nationwide Drunk Driving Crackdown Wraps up on Labor Day

The combined nationwide media blitz and DUI enforcement crackdown announced by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) on August 16 is drawing to a close this holiday weekend, and many state and local law enforcement agencies are joining forces to increase DUI checkpoints and saturation patrols. The agency has focused its efforts on the month of August and the Labor Day holiday in particular because historically a large number of alcohol-related traffic fatalities occur over Labor Day weekend. The Total DUI website at www.TotalDUI.com provides additional information about this effort and its early results, along with DUI resources that include an interactive breathalyzer, a DUI blog, and information about DUI law, DUI rights, and how to find a DUI attorney.

(PRWEB) September 5, 2006 -- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) media blitz and DUI enforcement crackdown ends this weekend, but law enforcement agencies across the United States have big plans for the final weekend. Labor Day weekend usually accounts for the largest number of alcohol-related traffic fatalities, so police agencies are doubly motivated to take advantage of the federal resources and funding behind the August 16 through Labor Day crackdown on drunk driving.

Law enforcement agencies across the country have joined the campaign, with advertising, DUI checkpoints, saturation patrols for drunk drivers, press releases, letters to local newspapers, and more. Those activities will continue nationally across the country, but Midwestern drivers can expect particular attention. 3,000 law enforcement agencies in the Midwest, including state, local, and county agencies in Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and Minnesota, will step up their DUI enforcement activities this weekend.

The focus of the additional drunk driving checkpoints and DUI saturation patrols will be on roads where a high percentage of drunk driving accidents have occurred in the past.

Although the Midwestern operation may be the largest, it’s hardly the only coalition on the road this weekend with the goal of cracking down on drunk drivers. In California, 25 law enforcement agencies have joined in the “Avoid the 25” campaign, and will operate similar checkpoints and DUI saturation patrols. With the Georgia Department of Transportation anticipating more than 2,000 accidents this holiday weekend and nearly 1,000 injuries, that state’s law enforcement officers are also planning increased roadblocks and saturation patrols. Although these campaigns have been among the best publicized, DUI enforcement across the country will be stepped up for the holiday weekend.

Total DUI’s website at breathalyzer tests and field sobriety tests, and arranges free consultations with local DUI lawyers. Total DUI also maintains a DUI blog reporting recent developments in DUI law, proposed changes to DUI law, and DUI stories from around the country.
