Mobile Digital Rights Management Patent Issued to July Systems

Technology significantly increases consumer downloads through its unique capabilities for flexible pricing, product promotions and real-time updates.

Santa Clara, CA (PRWEB) September 9, 2006 -- July Systems, the premier provider of smart mobile content retailing solutions, announced the U.S. Patents and Trademarks Office has issued the company a patent in the area of mobile content and applications Digital Rights Management (DRM). The patent, “Application Rights Management in a Mobile Environment” (US Patent 7089594) recognizes July’s unique DRM technology enabling mobile operators and content retailers to overcome today’s mobile environment limitations to apply - in real time and without application rewrites - a wide range of pricing models, promotions and purchasing options for mobile video, games, music and more. This provides consumers with more choices and makes it easier for them to buy and enjoy mobile content – key factors in the mass adoption of mobile data services.

"In most markets, no more than 5 percent of mobile subscribers are purchasing and downloading mobile content,” said Chris Coffman, Senior Research Analyst at Informa Telecoms & Media. “Many users are turned off by the complexity of purchasing and downloading mobile content today. It's critical that advancements in mobile retailing simplify rather than hinder that process."

Flexible billing is integral to making mobile content attractive to the remaining 95 percent
With the flexibility provided by July’s DRM technology, mobile operators and retailers can cater to consumers with the same merchandizing options available in online and real-world retailing experiences. The technology also gives operators and retailers the power to respond in real time to fluctuations in market demand and new opportunities.

“Flexible billing is integral to making mobile content attractive to the remaining 95 percent,” Coffman continued. “Consumers to date have been understandably hesitant to pay a single upfront fee to download content when they have little information on which to base their purchasing decision.”

July’s DRM technology effectively manages and safeguards digital rights of retailer content while allowing retailers to apply different pricing and merchandizing models including try-before-you-buy, subscription, rental, pay-per-use, and advertising-sponsored purchase, as well as community building features such as gifting and referrals. They can also execute real-time changes in price points, pricing models and promotions on an on-going basis to drive increased sales. Most importantly, they can do all this without having to make any changes to the content itself, making this a truly scalable and powerful mobile retailing solution.

"This patent fundamentally redefines how content digital rights are managed in the mobile environment, confirming July Systems’ position as a leader and innovator in the mobile content retailing space,” said July Chairman & CEO Ashok Narasimhan. “July’s stated mission has been to transform the way mobile entertainment is retailed today in order to move the industry beyond early adopters and reach mass market consumers. This latest development is yet another July milestone towards this mission.”
