Ortho Evra Contraceptive Patch Associated With Deadly Side Effects
Hissey Kientz, LLP, (http://www.hkllp.com) a toxic tort/mass tort law firm, is investigating Ortho Evra cases involving pulmonary embolisms, strokes, heart attacks and deep venous thrombosis (DVT).
Austin (PRWEB) September 22, 2006 -— The death rate for the Ortho Evra patch is more than three times higher than the rate associated with other contraceptives. The Associated Press, which cited federal death and injury reports, found that many women in their late teens and early twenties died in 2004 from blood clots believed to be related to the birth control patch side effects, and many more survived strokes and other clot-related problems.
The patch, which is applied to the skin, releases hormones including estrogen and progestin. The patch contains roughly the same amount of estrogen as the pill, but the patch sends hormones directly into the bloodstream rather than through the digestive tract, allowing at least 50% more estrogen absorption compared with the pill. More than 4 million women have used the patch since its debut in 2002.
The Food and Drug Administration released a statement in 2005 warning healthcare providers and patients of the increased risk associated with the Ortho Evra patch. The FDA also forced Ortho McNeil, the manufacturer of Ortho Evra, to update its drug label to better notify women of the higher risk of developing blood clots when using the patch compared with the birth control pill (http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/news/2005/NEW01262.html).
According to the statement, the FDA is continuing to monitor safety reports regarding the Ortho Evra birth control patch side effects.
Several lawsuits have already been filed by other parties after a report by the Associated Press revealed an internal memo, showing that Ortho McNeil failed to perform a study into the drug’s effects out of fear that results would be unfavorable (case numbers: 3:06 CV 40010, 06-4025-GPM, 06-54-GPM, 06-4020-GPM, 06-4021-GPM).
Hissey Kientz, LLP and its team of experienced mass tort lawyers have been retained in many cases nationwide involving the Ortho Evra birth control patch side effects.
