Still Looking Aimlessly on the Web?
With free web resources from small web sites becoming increasingly difficult to find in directories dominated by global players. This article discusses a new option open to the small web developer or hobby site owner.
(PRWEB) September 17, 2006 -- Ever looked for a free resource on the web only to become frustrated by the glut of irrelevant junk that gets returned. Then look no longer Freeunited a solution to everyone’s web searching woes has just been launched.
"I came up with the concept when looking for free images to use on my web site," said Colin Paterson a spokesmand for the company. "You wouldn’t think it’s that difficult but most of the top search results are now dominated by pay sites, all of which have the financial clout to optimise their presence on the more popular web directories. "
People have all had a similar fate when looking for free tutorials, music or any another resource one cares to mention. "It’s not as though this stuff doesn’t exist," said Paterson. "I have downloaded some really cool tunes from unsigned bands I found on a link, on a social book marking (SB) site."
These SB sites initially showed great promise and seemed to be the answer to all their problems.
"Great! I thought, at last a way to cut out all the dross from my search enquiries, but then the guys in the internet marketing departments caught on and now these sites, too are becoming the domain of the financially well endowed," said Paterson. "Again, assigning to the realm of internet purgatory the small independent developer, hobbyist and charity site organiser."
So what’s the solution? How does the company get what everyone really wants, things for free without having to create a Boolean web search, the logic of which would stump Deep Blue.
Freeunited has been formed to create a directory of sites offering free content. The company's intent is to give smaller groups a level playing field, and at the moment are taking submissions to be included in the directory so Freeunited encourages everyone to come and submit their favourite free sites.
"We do have certain restrictions in that we will not list any sites which promote illegal activity etc. and we will be vetting sites to see that they are appropriate before listing," said Paterson. "We feel this move will give us a unique selling point not present in social book marking sites. Of course, I should also add that we will not be charging for listings on our directory."
The Freeunited representative also added that it is the intention of the group to enlist the support of the wider web community in an aid to act as editors for the site.
