New Kind Of Hyperlocal Site Launches In Brooklyn: Until Monday

Hyperlocal Media LLC has launched Until Monday, a new kind of hyperlocal site intended for urban destinations throughout North America. The first instance is in Brooklyn, New York.

Brooklyn, NY (PRWEB) September 19, 2006 ---Until Monday, an online community for locals and visitors who want to know places as well as locals do, has launched its first instance in Brooklyn, New York.

"We chose Brooklyn because it's what's next. People already familiar with Manhattan are increasingly drawn to the distinct neighborhoods and unique cultural and retail offerings of Brooklyn. It's the hip borough," George Johnson, Hyperlocal Media's Co-founder and CEO said.

I see the site as a way to learn even more about Brooklyn and share that with people who already do or will hopefully come to love it as much as I do.
Though the list of things to do in any given urban community is exhaustive, Until Monday delivers a select offering presented by singular voices, knowledgeable and passionate about what's happening in their respective urban locations. The Managing Editor of Until Monday: Brooklyn is Sara Hohn, who has lived in various Brooklyn neighborhoods over the years, but currently resides in Kensington. Sara's worked as an information designer for the last 8 years. She's also a trained chef and librarian with a background in music and art history. "I love Brooklyn like the older, more charming sibling I never had," Hohn said. "I see the site as a way to learn even more about Brooklyn and share that with people who already do or will hopefully come to love it as much as I do."

"We want to capture the life of the culture of a place. A huge part of that is finding people like Sara. When we do, we want to give them a platform that helps create an exciting and dynamic experience," Johnson said. "If a physical place is rich and dynamic, it follows that the online community that serves it ought to be as well."

Part of Until Monday is a platform of community building and content delivery tools that blur the line between blogs and more fully-featured online media experiences. The tools aim to help users do more things with content they find interesting and helpful: subscribe to it, bookmark it, talk with others about it, and find out more about the people they're talking to. "The platform is growing. We're refining it and adding new features. We want to create hyperlocal experiences that are cool-that feel less like homework and more like the places they're about," Johnson said. "As local newspaper circulation and influence declines, people are looking for new local media relationships based on relevance, utility, and community. We want to become a welcome part of people's everyday local lives."

Though still in public beta, the site has started to get some industry notice. Popular blogger and Six Apart Vice President, Anil Dash said of Until Monday, "It's a beautiful community-based events site that's as attractive as it is useful." Mena Trott, Six Apart's President and Co-Founder, said, "the user interface just feels good to click around in."

Hyperlocal Media plans to implement final refinements to the first version of the site and add contributors to broaden its editorial scope in the next few weeks. Johnson said, "In the background, we're preparing to launch Until Monday in two more cities by the end of the year."

Hyperlocal Media (hlm) was founded out of a passion for cities and the desire to build online communities to serve them. The company creates media properties tailored to the economics of the new local landscape and built around cultural specificity, local relevance and social connectivity. Hyperlocal Media's aim is to be a part of local residents everyday lives and deliver scale, precision and engaged audiences to advertisers. The company relies on its collective experience in traditional local media, consumer Internet, and marketing to create communities of broad or very specific local interest.
