Mountain View, CA (PRWEB) September 24, 2006 -- Digital Rights Management for Google Writley, Spreadsheets, Maps and Picasa Web Albums.
Google's Writely and Spreadsheets get copy protection and digital rights management on the desktop with AegisDRM's protector.
Sensitive client lists, confidential reports, plans, maps designs and high value training materials can all be shared using Google's web services while being protected from going further.
AegisDRM products are unique in being able to apply Digital Rights Management to web based documents produced using Google's Writely and Google Spreadsheets allowing document creators or editors to control whether viewers can copy, screengrab, save or print a document.
AegisDRM Digital Rights Management product Protector has already been used by ESRI - the world leader in GIS (geographic information system) modeling and mapping software and technology - for over two years - protecting high value information in China. It works seamlessly with Google Maps too as well as with Picasa Web Albums and will work with Google Base (& Payments), Google Music and Google Video.
But isn't DRM "Evil"? Not necessarily - no more than locks or passwords. In a free market you can choose if and when to use them. Google doesn't give free access for anyone to your personal Gmail account for example - it lets you protect it with passwords. Evolution will allow each content provider to decide if they have chosen the right model!
Unusually for a Digital Rights Management product protected documents can still be indexed by Google if required.
Asked whether this product might be of interest to Schmidt, Page and Brin at Google, AegisDRM director Mark Baker stated
"Google has been making a number of carefully thought out small acquisitions and it looks very much as if these Digital Rights Management solutions fit the mould - both in order to offer a simple, functional alternative to Microsoft's DRM for Google users and as an important tool to a subset of users who deal in high value digital content.
Sure - "Information Wants To Be Free" is a popular mantra - just as "Property is theft" used to be. But as guru's like Stallman and Denning have tried to clarify this was intended to cover generally useful information - not confidential information about individuals or credit card information - or presumably your client list or confidential consulting report.
Of course letting users to monitize specific types of information (documents, audio, video etc) without forcing sharing gives an tool that allows Google development of alternative revenue model to AdWords."
