Documentary "In Their Moment: Capturing Treasured Memories Using the TURNIP Alzheimer's Approach" to Air on Charlotte's PBS Affiliate WTVI-TV at 10:30PM, November 2
Documentary featuring award-winning caregiver Turner Stimpson, reveals how family members, medical caregivers, and others can create and maintain a positive, meaningful, and loving relationship with those suffering from Alzheimer's or Dementia.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (PRWEB) September 24, 2006 -- A documentary examining a successful new approach for caring for persons suffering from Alzheimer's disease and dementia will air on the PBS Charlotte affiliate WTVI-TV on November 2nd at 10:30 PM. Entitled "In Their Moment: Capturing Treasured Memories Using the T.U.R.N.I.P Alzheimer's Approach", the documentary focuses on a technique for Alzheimer's patient interaction developed by Turner Stimpson, resident care coordinator for The Pines of Davidson, a Life Care Community in Davidson, North Carolina.
"Family members and doctors often treat Alzheimer's patients like they have somehow departed or 'aren't there'," said Stimpson. "The truth is that the person is still the same individual he always was, fully hearing and comprehending, and understanding this fact is the first step in establishing a trusting and positive relationship with any Alzheimer's patient."
"In Their Moment" follows Stimpson as he makes patient rounds at The Pines facility, and contains interviews where he explains his 'T.U.R.N.I.P. Approach" to Alzheimer's patient care. Interviews with physicians familiar with his approach to Alzheimer's care are also included.
Mr. Stimpson has been recognized for his work with Alzheimer's and Dementia patients by Duke Center for Aging and the Council on Aging, and was award the J.C. Penny Golden Rule Award for his service to the elderly in 1989. He was also the subject of the 2004 PBS documentary, "Love Spoken here: A Day in the Life of Turnip, Approaching Alzheimer's with Hope and Joy", and is the author of three books on Alzheimer's patient care; "Love Spoken Here", "What's in a Name?", and "Turnip Everlasting".
The 26 minute documentary, "In Their Moment", available on DVD from Warren Publishing (www.warrenpublishing.net) was written and produced by Cathy Brophy, and filmed by Media Link Communications, Inc., of Harrisonburg, Virginia. (www.medialinkweb.com)
WTVI-TV (www.wtvi.org) will hold a preview screening of "In Their Moment" on October 26th, to be attended by Mr. Stimpson, local healthcare professionals, Alzheimer's Association representatives, and other invited guests.
