High School Students Biking Across America To Raise Funds for Cancer Research

Seven high school students are having the experience of a lifetime this summer, biking across the country, seeing America up close, while raising money and awareness for the University of North Carolina Lineberger Cancer Center.

Minneapolis, MN (PRWEB) June 27, 2007 -- Seven high school students are having the experience of a lifetime this summer, biking across the country, seeing America up close, while raising money and awareness for the University of North Carolina Lineberger Cancer Center.

Cycling 60 miles daily, the boys, ages 14-17, together with two leaders, are learning self-reliance and teamwork as they battle the elements, challenging themselves to endure the daily grind of 10 weeks on the road. Starting June 10th on the coast of Maryland and hoping to finish sometime in August on the shore of the Pacific in Anacortes, Washington, the young cyclists are molding their characters and reaping the benefits of fresh air and strenuous exercise as they bike across the nation's heartland, meeting Americans in thirteen states.

They've dubbed their epic trek "WaBu" meaning "Washington or Bust." After 13 days on the road, somewhere in northern Ohio, the WaBu Cycle Tour 2007 has raised over $8,000 and surpassed their own fund-raising expectations. Recently the team members were discussing revising upward their initial goal of $10,000.

Dean Rice, one of the team's sponsors, said, "These guys traded their typical summer breaks for the adventure of a lifetime and a good cause. We hope to give them a warm Minneapolis welcome when they reach us here, around July 8th." Rice's website fitnessrace.com is logging and tracking the WaBu team's progress with maps, postings and photographs of the team's adventure. A route from Stillwater to Coon Rapids will be posted for their arrival and Rice invites cyclists to join the WaBu team for that 35-mile leg before the team rests a day in Coon Rapids.

To follow the WaBu Cycle Team's progress, read the route postings and learn the expected arrival date, go to www.fitnessrace.com/wabu . To donate to the UNC Lineberger Cancer Center or for more information about the WaBu team, visit www.wabucycletour.com .
