'Pun' in a Million - Hatley Kicks Off Global Water Initiative with Call for Entries for T-Shirt Caption Contest

In a call for entries, Hatley has asked consumers to "get your pun on" with a contest that will see the winning caption illustrated by Hatley's design team and made into a t-shirt, from which 100% of the sales profit will be distributed as a part of the Hatley Global Water Initiative. The winning t-shirt will be released in time for the United Nations World Water Day 2008 (March 22), an initiative that grew out of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development.

Montreal, Canada (PRWEB) July 18, 2007 -- Hatley, the company that "gets clothes to nature," has extended a "pun" way for consumers to become involved in the company's environmental practices with its first ever t-shirt caption contest to benefit the Hatley Global Water Initiative.

"We continuously adopt environmental practices to ensure we are producing our clothing and gift items in the most environmentally conscious manner possible, using materials that are known to be safe," said Chris Oldland, president, Hatley. "The t-shirt contest is a great way to involve our customers as well as let them know what we are doing as a company to protect the environment."

The deadline for caption submissions is September 30, 2007 at midnight Eastern Standard Time. All submissions must be made through www.hatleynature.com. Full contest details and full terms and conditions are available at www.hatleynature.com.contest.htm.

In addition to having a wearable recognition of their achievement, the first place winner also will receive a $500 Hatley gift certificate. Second and third place winners each will receive a Hatley gift certificate, $300 and $100 respectively.

Hatley Global Water Initiative
Launched in July 2007, the Hatley Global Water Initiative is a program dedicated to helping communities maintain clean and adequate water resources to protect the health of it local residents in addition to maintaining local industry. Hatley is donating a percentage of its profits every year to dedicated water based charities.

As part of its overall commitment to the environment, the company has designated two charities that will be supported by its Global Water Initiative: Great Lakes United and Lake Massawippi Water Protection Association.

About the Charities
Great Lakes United is a cross border (United States and Canada) organization that works together with grassroots environmental organizations, municipalities, unions, and dedicated individuals to work for stronger water quality standards, zero discharge, and other programs aimed at reducing the amount of toxic chemicals used and produced in the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River. Agreements to protect these bodies of water have contributed to global environment policy. These successes are shared and furthered by the growth of a vocal and increasingly influential environmental movement. Great Lakes United is based out of Buffalo, New York and Montreal, Quebec.

The Lake Massawippi Water Protection Association is a lobby group which exists in an endeavor to preserve the quality of the Lake and its watershed. North Hatley (Hatley's namesake) lies on Lake Massawippi in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. Last summer the Lake suffered enormously after being found to contain Cyanobacteria.

Hatley's Environmental Practices
Hatley's current environmental practices include:
-We use only azo-free dyes in our apparel.
-We have replaced all our polybags in India with Mater-Bi bags. These bags are 100% compostable and biodegradable, made out of starch and cotton seeds. They are completely non-toxic and will degrade in your compost in less than 2 months. So far we have replaced about 1 million bags a year with these bags. We're currently in the process of replacing all our shipping bags from China with the same material.
-We only use non-chlorinated bleach.
-We use only closed loop dyers. This ensures that the waste water from the dyeing process does not contaminate the water table of the communities we work with.
-We have a company goal to use organic cotton, natural fibers, and alternative sustainable fibers as much as possible. Current plans for a vegetable dye organic cotton infant program are in progress for fall 2008.
-Our catalogues are printed on paper that comes from FSC managed forests.
-All of our magnetic lists are printed on recycled paper.
-All of our products are PVC free.
-All hang tags and packaging are printed using vegetable ink on unbleached, uncoated and recycled paper whenever available.
