Two videos focus on french baroque tradition in today's world:

The Art Of Baroque Dance: Folies d'Espagne From Page to Stage
(DVD in English and French; VHS in English only)

The new video, The Art Of Baroque Dance: Folies d'Espagne From Page to Stage, is enriched with French historical images, refined Baroque dancing, and legible Feuillet notation. The preservation of dance is explored in an easy-to-understand entertaining manner. The artistic sample is the well-known Folies d'Espagne, which is studied from the academic page to its transformation into a vibrant performance.

This fascinating video, produced in France, reveals the 17th century Baroque dance of the sophisticated era of King Louis XIV. The King himself, an excellent dancer, ordered the invention of a notation system for dance to teach, codify, and spread this art. The French still continue to celebrate 17th century dance today. It is considered to be the most perfect form of art, uniting all of the qualities needed to educate one's body and soul. It is created by dancers in Paris.

The Baroque dance sample is the popular Folies d'Espagne. based on its famous music. It has been selected because it features short highly expressive variations, each with its own unique temperament and choreography. Through Folies d'Espagne, the viewer can trace 5 important elements of Baroque dance: dance notation, treatment of space, arm embellishments, relation to music, and interpretation of the dancer. The multi-faceted interpretation offers the viewer valuable insight into the artistic stages which develop a dance performance.

The video's director/choreographer, Natalie Van Parys, has worked with Francine Lancelot, the most renowned specialist of Baroque dance in France. She has performed in many Baroque dance companies and has worked as a director and choreographer for Baroque operas and stage productions spanning the globe from France to Japan. Through this video, her lifetime of knowledge and experience enable the next generation to appreciate a venerable art from the past.

Dance Vivaldi: A Contemporary Baroque Ballet
(Created by l'Eventail, an award-winning French Dance Company) http://www.dancetimepublications.com/store/dance_vivaldi.shtml
This ballet, choreographed to Vivaldi's "Four Seasons", combines delicate French Baroque dance technique with the vibrancy of the contemporary theatrical world.

The new video, Dance Vivaldi: A Contemporary Baroque Ballet , presents a fascinating modern expression of the great tradition of 17th century French Baroque dance. Choreographer Marie-Geneviève Massé dissolves the boundaries between past and present, blending delicate French Baroque technique with the vibrant motion of contemporary dance. As traditional boundaries are eliminated, a new movement merger is introduced.

The DVD features Vivaldi's The Four Seasons, so the concepts and phrasing of the choreography are in perfect concert with the musical imagery. In sensitive synchronization, the dancers' movements reflect the musical themes. As with all of Vivaldi's music, the overall theme is "Time." Baroque dancers, highlight the future floating down into the past. Baroque and modern styles are layered and interlaced as the dancers also deal with the passage of time in life.

As the French are direct inheritors of the Baroque tradition, they infuse the rules with their innate sense of that culture to illuminate today's world. In this way, the vision of the French opens doors for American artists, academics and dance enthusiasts.

French choreographer, Marie-Geneviève Massé, with her extensive experience in the French Baroque genre, deeply understands its music and dance vocabulary. In 2000, she was appointed Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Arts). The French government sponsors her award-winning Baroque dance company, L'Eventail.

This work heralds the creative possibilities of using the historic roots of our theatrical dance tradition, by rebuilding the artistic threshold for eloquence in today's world.
