Conceptual Art to Create Exposure for Lesser Known Artist

Conceptual art is art in which the concept or idea involved in the work take precedence over traditional aesthetic and material concerns. The Thousand Lots of Sand concept is no different and it is the seeming absurdity of it that feeds people to go viral giving the artist the much needed exposure. At least that is the hope for the art project.

French West Indies (PRWEB) January 23, 2007 -- Caribbean artist Dimitrios takes sand from an exotic beach in the Caribbean - art lovers can watch a video of Dimitrios on the beach showing how he sticks the sand on canvas and how he stencils a lot number on it to hang the piece on your wall. Dimitrios will only make one thousand canvas art pieces with sand.

The twist for his 'lots of sand' is wordplay on 'lots of land' - just as with land he virtually subdivides the beach into thousand lots of about 0.9 square metres each which the artist transfers on canvas. Limiting the number of lots to thousand creates scarcity and thus the price of each lot of sand goes up after each 50 lots sold.

"As with any piece of art, I do get a lot of mixed responses on my project," says Dimitrios, "Many people think I am crazy, some call what I do rubbish, and thank God the majority believes it's the coolest thing. Who would not want to be a part of this? Who would not want to have the story behind this hang on his wall? It's a conversation piece, that for sure," artist Dimitrios concludes.
