The Inspiration Ministries and Convoy of Hope Announce Relief Efforts for Fire-Ravaged Southern California

The organizations have been in Southern California for a week, working to meet the needs of those displaced by the catastrophic fires and those fighting them.

Charlotte, NC (Vocus/PRWEB ) October 30, 2007 -- Following the devastating Southern California wildfires, The Inspiration Ministries and humanitarian relief partner Convoy of Hope today announced that they are hard at work to meet the needs of the more than half-million people displaced by the fires and those fighting them.

A team from The Inspiration Ministries and Convoy of Hope is currently staging response efforts from the Spring Valley and Poway areas, which have an estimated one-million residents living within a 15-minute radius. Volunteers are distributing approximately 240,000 lbs. (seven 18-wheelers) of PowerAde, juice, water and snacks to victims of the Southern California wildfires and to firefighters at relief stations.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Southern California," said David Cerullo, Chairman and CEO of The Inspiration Ministries. One of the most important things that we can do at this time is reach out in compassion and generosity to find out how we can serve the residents in this area."

A Convoy of Hope tractor-trailer filled with approximately 40,000 lbs. of cleaning supplies, paper products, personal hygiene items and N-95 paper face masks also arrived in Southern California Saturday night.

Paul Coroleuski, who led some of the Convoy of Hope Katrina relief efforts as part of the US Disaster Response Team, describes the California fires saying, People are on edge, but the devastation is localized with pockets of normalcy. Clean up here will be a huge effort. There is soot everywhere — even those spared from loss will have to make a big effort cleaning and getting things back to ‘normal."

Approximately 519,754 acres (or 812 sq. miles) have burned with 70% being in San Diego County. Three deaths have been confirmed and 65 injuries reported. More than 12,000 individuals are still being housed in 45 shelters. The California Office of Emergency Services (OES) reported that approximately 321,000 residences had been evacuated at the height of the wildfires. As of Thursday afternoon 24,007 customers were without power due to the wildfires and high winds.
