Paula Abdul began studying dance at the age of eight, and received a scholarship to dance camp at the age of fifteen. While attending California State University, Paula tried out to join the cheerleading squad for the Los Angeles Lakers NBA team and was selected from a pool of 700. Within three months, she became head choreographer. She became one of the most sought-after choreographers at the height of the music video era.
In 1998, Paula released her first Pop-R&B album, which spent 10 weeks at number one. In 2002, Paula became one of the celebrity judges on American Idol, and is called the "heart and soul" of the show for the encouragement she gives to the hopeful singers.
