Carnegie Mellon's Tartan Racing Team Shows the World Who's Boss

Code quality vital in $2 million victory in 2007 DARPA Urban Challenge.

Warwick, RI (PRWEB) November 9, 2007 -- McCabe Software, Inc. is joining other sponsors in congratulating Carnegie Mellon University's Tartan Racing team, winner of the 2007 DARPA Urban Challenge.

DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) awarded the $2 million grand prize to Tartan Racing after its autonomous Chevy Tahoe, named "Boss", beat out the second closest finisher and arch rival, Stanford University's "Junior", by 20 minutes.

As the sponsor who supplied the software code quality analysis solution, McCabe Software was thrilled with the results. "I closely followed this event because of our company's sponsorship and because it's such a unique competition," says David Belhumeur, McCabe Software's CEO. "With other factors such as GPS systems, long and short range radar, and sensors being roughly the same on all vehicles, many thought that software would be the deciding factor. It appears that this was indeed the case, with some of the other teams reportedly working long hours on buggy code."

Tartan's self-driving SUV utilized ten computers with hundreds of thousands of lines of software at the wheel. The critical nature of the software required a solution that could uncover the inherent complexity in order to mitigate risk. The Tartan Racing Team selected McCabe IQ for the job of analyzing the very large C++ code base.

The Urban Challenge was a competition in which vehicles had to navigate, park and deal with traffic on a 60-mile suburban course. They operated without human guidance and relied only on sensors and computers. They were to obey traffic laws, merge into moving traffic, avoid obstacles, and negotiate intersections.

In addition to McCabe Software, Tartan Racing's sponsors include GM, Caterpillar, Continental AG, Intel, Google, Applanix, TeleAtlas, NetApp, Vector CANTech, Ibeo, Mobileye, HP, CarSim, CleanPower Resources, and M/A-Com.
