Cantor Jack Mendelson in Erik Anjou's "A Cantor's Tale," with DVD Release for Hanukkah

"A Cantor's Tale" takes us on a musical voyage to recapture a form of Jewish music- cantorial music- that is having a renaissance, thanks in part to the self-proclaimed mission of Cantor Jack Mendelson. The cantor returns to Brooklyn to revisit "the good old days" of cantorial music that he is attempting to bring back to the synagogue. His journey, joined by a cast of renowned cantors and aficionados, is captured on film by Erik Greenberg Anjou in the DVD, being released November 30, just in time for Hanukkah.

Teaneck, NJ (PRWEB) November 29, 2007 -- Ergo Media Inc., the world's largest distributor of Jewish videos and DVDs, is delighted to announce the DVD release of its smash hit, "A Cantor's Tale", being released on November 30th, 2007.

His journey is captured on film by Erik Greenberg Anjou in the DVD.

Having played at over 100 International and Jewish Film Festivals, Erik Greenberg Anjou's elegant documentary about Cantor Jack Mendelson's one man mission to be the carrier of a sublime tradition, namely "hazzanut" (Jewish cantorial music), speaks to both Jews and non-Jews alike about the value and the sometimes difficult lessons of tradition.

The film takes us on a musical voyage that spans the Atlantic, originating in Cantor Mendelson's birthplace of Boro Park, Brooklyn and reaching all the way to Jerusalem. The experience of hearing the world's most renowned cantors in the Synagogue was part of a lifestyle that provided American Jewry with a rich cultural heirloom. It is Cantor Mendelson's mission to insure that this legacy is passed on to this and the generations to come, in a way that is both true to its origins, while at the same time, relevant to the modern world.

The feature-length documentary treats us to appearances by renowned cantors and aficionados Joseph Malovany, Ben-Zion Miller, Alberto Mizrachi, Matthew Lazar, Neil Shicoff, Jackie Mason and Alan Dershowitz. A winner of top awards at film festivals in Warsaw and Tel Aviv, the film also won the "Audience Award" at the Washington DC Jewish Film Festival, the Miami Jewish Film Festival, and the San Diego Jewish Film Festival, and the "Special Director's Award" at the Detroit Jewish Film Festival.

The DVD is being released in Letterbox Wide Screen Format with extras that include "outtake" scenes not featured in the original film. 95 minutes, Color, $39.95.
