Facebook Students Smell the Christmas Number One Spot

Student musicians on Facebook are challenging the giants of the music industry in a bid for the UK Christmas number one spot. The group 'Let's Make This Year's Christmas Number One' have collaborated to compose and record a festive charity single 'Smells Like Christmas Time' to be released on iTunes on December 10th.

Sheffield, South Yorkshire UK (Bluehost/PRWEB ) December 12, 2007 -- Anarchy Xmas, a group of UK students, are challenging music industry giants in a bid for the Christmas No.1 spot with their single "Smells Like Christmas Time".

Anarchy Xmas, formed through social networking site Facebook, includes 15 members from around the country who hope to grab the coveted top spot and raise money for charity in the process.

The time has come to put the festive fun back into the Christmas pop charts. Anarchy Xmas is fed up of X-Factor winners having topped the last two Christmas charts with non-Christmas songs. Now is the time for a real festive number one.
The song, which has already received support through airplay on regional BBC radio stations, will be available to download from digital stores such as iTunes from Monday December 10th.

All proceeds from the sale of the single will go to Oxfam, NSPCC, Cancer Research UK, Shelter and Friends of the Earth.

Composer of 'Smells Like Christmas Time' Tom Rosenthal, a student at Durham University, says:

"The time has come to put the festive fun back into the Christmas pop charts. Anarchy Xmas is fed up of X-Factor winners having topped the last two Christmas charts with non-Christmas songs. Now is the time for a real festive number one."

Anarchy Xmas was the brainchild of Sheffield students Iz El-Bahnasy and Tom Langhorn. The group has already enlisted more than 10,000 supporters through Facebook, MySpace and YouTube.

Inspired by Chris Anderson's infamous book 'The Long Tail', the project aims to make a statement by demonstrating the power of collaboration through online media.

"There are so many musicians out there writing, producing and distributing good content to their small fan hives. If all these small scale artists collaborate on one project, something big will come out of it. That is what we are trying to achieve with Anarchy Xmas," Says El-Bahnasy.

Recently, Anarchy Xmas' MySpace profile faced a setback when it was mysteriously deleted, losing contact with many supporters. Myspace has so far failed to explain why the profile was erased.

Anarchy Xmas worked fast to get the profile back up and running. The profile has recently gained the friendship and support of well known Myspace bands such as Bombay Bicycle Club, Mark Ronson, Enter Shikari and Arctic Monkeys.
