December 2007 Roemer Report Notes Increase in Number of Women Truck Drivers

Companies are hiring women to help offset the driver shortage. 5.2 percent of truck drivers in 2006 were women, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

Toledo, OH (PRWEB) December 11, 2007 -- The December edition of The Roemer Report (www.roemer-insurance.com/transportation/transportation_romerreport_current.htm) discusses the growth in the number of women truck drivers in the Unites States and notes that, while companies are hiring women to offset the current driver shortage, women simply make good truckers. Trucking is one of many nontraditional careers in the U.S. Nontraditional occupations are defined as those in which a certain gender comprises only 25 percent or less of the labor force. According to The Roemer Report, compensation for truck driving is another selling point. Men and women are paid equally by the mile—so there is no chance of earning lower wages.

The Roemer Report is a monthly digest of news for the trucking industry read by fleet operators, owner-operators, and allied personnel. Often referred to as the “Kiplinger Letter of the Trucking Industry“, the report has been published by Roemer Insurance for more than 30 years. The publication is distributed free of charge in both print and electronic formats and is archived on the Roemer Insurance website and Insure My Rig (www.insuremyrig.com/roemerreport.htm), the small fleet division of Roemer Insurance.

Kiplinger Letter of the Trucking Industry
The current edition of The Roemer Report offers a review of a new study of heavy-duty truck engines by J.D. Power and Associates, a discussion of the potential dangers of allowing Mexican tractor-trailers onto U.S. highways, and tactics employed by a growing number of trucking firms to help workers quit smoking. According to the Roemer Report, some 50 percent of over-the-road truckers smoke cigarettes, compared to about 21 percent of the general population.

Other topics addressed in December’s edition include tips for driving safely in fog. Fog creates the illusion of slow motion and makes drivers think they are going slowly when they aren’t. According to The Roemer Report, although truckers may think fast in emergency situations, even veteran drivers benefit from reviewing procedures for driving in fog.
