Cipriano's Saddle River Backyard Design Garners International Honors

The Association of Pool & Spa Professionals recognizes Cipriano Landscape Design's innovative approach to a difficult slope as one of the year's best projects

Ramsey, NJ (PRWEB) December 16, 2007 -- The steep terrain at Bill Temiz's two-acre Saddle River estate presented a formidable challenge to Cipriano Landscape Design's team of landscape professionals. The question was how to accommodate Temiz's desire for a luxurious hardscape and pool when there were dramatic elevation changes all the way from the street to the rear property line. With a little perseverance and a collaborative effort, the firm took what could have been a nightmare project and created a backyard oasis for its client. Those efforts were recognized this week by the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals, which awarded the completed design its Silver International Award of Excellence.

When Temiz was notified that his home had received an international honor, he gratefully thanked the team of companies that worked on the project. "We couldn't be more pleased with the outcome of our project and having our property recognized internationally is just an added bonus," Says homeowner Bill Temiz. A smooth relationship between the custom home builder, George Kevo of Kevo Development Corp., and Cipriano Landscape Design, which specializes in custom pools and landscapes, made all the difference. "We are fortunate Mr. Kevo had the foresight to involve us in the planning very early on in the process," says Chris Cipriano, President of Cipriano Landscape Design. "There were several major changes that had to occur in the original site design. If they had taken place after the project started, they could have cost the homeowner over $100,000."

Temiz initially wanted a formal backyard for entertaining guests. But to level the slope according to local zoning regulations would have required four or five consecutive retaining walls, each over 100-feet long. The return on investment for such a complex design was a concern. The height restriction for the walls and the limitations of the slope posed a challenge for Bill Moore, Cipriano Landscape Design's landscape architect. His task included redesigning the swimming pool to include a natural waterfall that spills into the main pool and creating a modified vanishing-edge pool with a waterfall cascading down toward the main dining patio. Moore recommended natural rock cropping as an attractive alternative to retaining walls. Rock cropping allowed boulders to form two tiers with waterfalls that were able to absorb a significant amount of the incline, while adding natural beauty. "With our collaborative team efforts, we were able to execute the project as quickly and precisely as possible, meeting all of Mr. Temiz's desires for a one of a kind outdoor oasis," Cipriano says.

The Association of Pool & Spa Professionals is the leading international trade association for swimming pools, spas and hot tubs. The group's 37th annual award ceremony was held in late November at the Rosen Center in Orlando, Fla., and it was attended by the hundreds of international applicants vying for awards, including some of the most prestigious companies in the swimming pool industry. All strived for worldwide recognition of their personal masterpieces. One of those top international designs now lies in the heart of Bergen County's own Saddle River.

Established in 1989, Cipriano Landscape Design is a recognized industry leader in custom residential landscapes and swimming pools. After a little more than a decade in business, the company catapulted to the top of the state's luxury landscaping and pool design and construction industries when it was awarded a $2.5 million residential landscape project. Today along with the Ramsey, N.J. office, the Cipriano family also owns a 10-acre farm and nursery in Mahwah, N.J., where large caliper specimen trees and other rare plants are grown. With a design office headed by Certified Landscape Architect William Moore, the Cipriano team recently won the Northeast Pool & Spa Association's 2007 Best in Competition swimming pool award and a silver medal at Association of Pool & Spa Professional's International Awards of Excellence. www.PlantNJ.com
