We are all familiar with lawyers' ads on radio, TV and newspapers that offer their services if we have been injured. This is an example of expensive types of advertisements. Now lawyers have found a very cheap, effective and dishonest way to advertise by highlighting LASIK complications as a method to recruit clients. These sites claim to be honest sites created by LASIK patients who have had complicated LASIK surgery and the site warns people, thus protecting the public. However these sites are totally bogus. The sites are characterized by 100 percent rambling of complaints. The false message is that maybe LASIK is unsafe. These sites are "optimized" so that they appear on the first pages of major search engines.

Simple investigations of the sites and their sponsors reveals that all is false. The registered website owner never had a LASIK surgery and many times no such person even exists. There is no real address for this bogus person, nor real phone number and nor active e-mail. The whole site is a fabrication. Therefore the public is done an injustice. As long as these sites exist the public will not know whether what they read on the internet is true or not. The average person who does research will be fooled and make a wrong decision about LASIK.

Generally, a contact page on these sites contains an invitation to "share your bad LASIK experience with us." When consumers fill out the contact form, they reveal their contact information and the lawyer can use their information and may then contact them and make his pitch (the lawyer will take about 40 percent of any settlement). In essence, these sites are not meant to help people to make informed decisions, but are aimed at those who have already had LASIK and may not be totally happy, a number that is decreasing as LASIK becomes progressively safer.

However, one of the unfortunate results of this tactic is that potential patients who search for more information on LASIK surgery and encounter these sites postpone their plans and continue to wear glasses or contact lenses. Most of them are not aware that recent studies showed that current LASIK technologies are safer, on average, than a permanent use of contact lenses.

LASIK went a long way since its inception, and it is a safe procedure when performed by an experienced eye surgeon," explains a prominent laser eye surgeon from Manhattan, one of the professionals behind the new initiative.

The website contains information on misleading information and advertising practices employed by lawyers.
