In Wake of Gingrich-Cuomo Debate, Documentary Reveals Drift in Cuomo Camp

The truthful and inspiring storytelling of Mr. Holzer in “The Wounded Warrior” stands in direct contrast with Mario Cuomo’s point of view.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) February 27, 2007 -- On Februray 28, 2007, former New York Governor Mario Cuomo and former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich will appear on the historic stage of New York’s Cooper Union (where Abraham Lincoln made his great “Right Makes Might” speech) to engage in a dialogue about the issues and challenges facing the nation as we approach the 2008 elections. Harold Holzer, the great Lincoln scholar and co-author of some of Mr. Cuomo’s books on Lincoln, will be the event chair. The purpose of the debate, moderated by Tim Russert, is to lift public discourse from sound bites and insults, and to engage the public's interest in how to solve America’s problems in the conciliatory spirit of Lincoln, whose speech from that very stage earned him the Republican nomination in 1860.

“The Wounded Warrior” (www.thewoundedwarrior.com), a lyrical and controversial documentary produced by RebelLight Communications, features Mr. Harold Holzer as its main narrator. “The Wounded Warrior” relates Abraham Lincoln’s presidency and the political climate of the Civil War to our divided society today. “The Wounded Warrior” examines such timely issues as the Northern anti-war movement and the press’s relentless campaign to stop Lincoln’s so-called “unconstitutional war,” Lincoln’s suspension of habeas corpus, and military tribunals. The documentary also draws a strong parallel between unpopular policies of Abraham Lincoln and George W. Bush, and it shows how both presidents divided society on issues of the legality of war and changed the purpose of the war in the middle of it.

Interestingly, Harold Holzer, narrator of “The Wounded Warrior” and close associate of Mr. Cuomo, is the one who draws these parallels. An author of more than 22 books on Lincoln and the Civil War, Mr. Holzer was the historical consultant on Mr.Cuomo’s latest book “Why Lincoln Matters,” which, in fact, asserts differences between the Lincoln and Bush presidencies, accusing the Bush administration of moral bankruptcy.

And yet, the truthful and inspiring storytelling of Mr. Holzer in “The Wounded Warrior” stands in direct contrast with Mr. Cuomo’s point of view and take on the same issue. Mr. Holzer emphasizes the similar steps Lincoln and Bush took in their policies and asserts the similarities between the Civil War and today’s war, and between the 1864 and 2004 presidential races (in both cases Democrats nominating an anti-war war “hero”). He also stresses the hysterical hatred toward the President by many Americans and especially in the press.
