Making Sure it All Adds up for Tax Day, Last-Minute Organization Tips from DayTimers

As the deadline for for submitting taxes is almost here, DayTimers provides some last-minute tips for making the tax submittal process as easy as possible, as well as help be best-prepared for future tax seasons.

Lehigh Valley, PA (PRWEB) April 15, 2007 -- What do tight spaces, Donald Trump's hair and tax season all have in common? They all make people uncomfortable. With tax day looming ahead, it's time for tax-time procrastinators to get in gear and get it over with.

"Tax season doesn't need to be a heavy burden, but when people wait until the last minute, it suddenly becomes a high-pressure task," comments Maria Woytek, DayTimers Time Management Expert. "DayTimers offers a few simple tips that can help make tax season less stressful."

DayTimers has the following quick tips to make tax filing as smooth as possible this year, and hopefully, reducing tax anxiety next year.

Categorize it! Less time will be spent doing taxes when files and forms are categorized prior to actually doing the work--whether it's alone or with a tax specialist. For example, establishing a category for company expenses and another for health insurance will make it a breeze to find necessary paperwork quickly and easily. Additionally, if, heaven forbid, one ever gets audited, categorization will make that process much less painful. Don't wait, set up categories now for next year's taxes.

Facilitate it! For those feel ill at the mere thought of doing taxes--especially this late in the game-- there are resources available. Contact a tax accountant or even the IRS directly at (800) 829-1040 to voice questions. Tax filers also can go online to irs.gov to gather vital tax forms and information.

Take it! To avoid multiple trips, never visit your accountant empty-handed. Bring documentation on income (W-2s, 1099s, social security statement, etc.), income adjustments (moving expenses, student loan interests paid, and IRA contributions) and deductions (mortgage interest, real estate taxes, charitable gifts, etc.).

Store it! Once the dreaded task of doing taxes is over with for the year, keep a designated spot for storing tax documents and important receipts. Keeping a file all year long will make the process of collecting necessary papers quick and easy when tax season comes again.
Keep it! Want to throw out old tax information forms from the past? Anything that is over three years old can go, but always keep W-2 and 1099 forms, as well as a copy of actual tax returns.

Record it! Even if it isn't something prepared for this tax season, it is never too late to begin keeping a record for financial purposes. Use a day planner to record expenses and set intermediate deadlines for storing and categorizing tax info. This will make it easy, when revisiting old receipts, to determine why the expense was acquired and with whom. A DayTimer planner can even be used as a legal document in an audit situation.
