3M to Provide Data Mapping and Terminology Services in Support of the CDC’s BioSense Public Health Initiative
3M Terminology Consulting Services will be used to standardize and integrate patient data being sent to the CDC and BioSense from major healthcare providers, pharmacies, and clinical laboratories nationwide.
Salt Lake City, Utah (PRWEB) May 3, 2007 -- 3M Health Information Systems has been selected by Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) to provide data mapping and terminology consulting services in support of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) BioSense public health initiative. SAIC is the prime contractor to the CDC on BioSense implementation.
3M Terminology Consulting Services will be used to standardize and integrate patient data being sent to the CDC and BioSense from major healthcare providers, pharmacies, and clinical laboratories nationwide. The CDC’s BioSense program seeks to provide early detection of a possible bio-terrorism threat or naturally occurring disease outbreak, and supports public health officials and scientists in situational awareness and effective public-health response.
Combining expert consulting with advanced software tools and the robust vocabulary content of the 3M Healthcare Data Dictionary, 3M terminology consultants will support the CDC BioSense program by interpreting and integrating data from diverse clinical laboratory systems across the country, and then mapping the data to national terminology standards such as LOINC® and SNOMED CT®. The expected result is consistent and standardized patient data that can be used with confidence for bio-surveillance and public health reporting.
“We are proud to participate with SAIC in advancing technology for improved public health” said Lee Min Lau, M.D., Ph.D., government medical director, 3M Health Information Systems. “3M’s real-world operational experience in terminologies and standards implementation can support national, regional and state data-exchange initiatives by improving the interoperability of clinical information.”
The goals of the BioSense initiative, a program of the CDC’s National Center for Public Health Informatics, include the advancement of analytics for pre-diagnostic and diagnostic data; collaboration with state, local, and regional systems to provide data in near real time; increased sharing of technology among federal, state, and local public health agencies; and the promotion of national standards and specifications to ensure integration with other public health systems.
