But that's not enough to make it to the finals year-after-year. It takes the hard work, creativity and dedication to excellence of our entire team to rise to this national level.
"Two things propel our magazine to the top of our industry," says Prism Publications founder, Deborah Wyatt Fellows. "We have a glorious area to cover and we have great talents on our team. Virtually the same staff--led by Jeff Smith, editor and Diane Kolak, art director--has been responsible for these awards across the last five years." For more than 25 years, Traverse has captured the spirit imbued in the expression, "Up North." For Fellows, the consistent, growing success of the magazine is a reflection of her readers' passion for the land, lakes and lifestyle. That passion, shared by she and her staff, drives the magazine's mission to cover life Up North for local residents, weekend and summer tourists and those who retire to the area.

The magazine's dedication to that mission was recognized by CRMA judges, who say, "Traverse successfully delivers insightful editorial on a wide range of subjects. The writing, reporting, design and photography come together to create a product that offers personality, discerning analysis and practical information. The front of book section is particularly outstanding in its coverage of community life, while the feature well is comprehensive and fresh."

More than 70 judges from 35 publications like Glamour, Better Homes & Gardens, Sports Illustrated, Gourmet, The New York Times, The Washington Post and Bon Appétit reviewed 950 entries--the most in CRMA's history. Awards were announced during a gala at the CRMA conference on May 7, in Denver, CO.

"When you look around at Northern Michigan--at the gorgeous landscape, picturesque, livable communities and tremendous lifestyle--it's easy to see that we have a great foundation," continues Fellows. "But that's not enough to make it to the finals year-after-year. It takes the hard work, creativity and dedication to excellence of our entire team to rise to this national level." Traverse followed gold-award winner Berkshire Living (MA) and beat Honolulu magazine, which received a bronze.

The competition is a 22-year-old national contest, coordinated by the University of Missouri School of Journalism on behalf of CRMA. In addition to nearly 100 CRMA members, the contest is also open to non-member publications in North America that qualify.
