Delivering Life Saving Drugs with Hot Peppers

Yet capsaicin isn't the only medicinal chemical behind the spicy nature of hot peppers. One natural drug manufacturer has discovered an entirely new use for hot peppers that could lead to revolutionary treatments for a long list of diseases.

This new technology utilizes capsaicin along with the other active (heat producing) chemicals also found in hot pepper plants. Although Capsaicin is the best known of these spicy chemicals, there are four other equally important ones. These naturally spicy chemicals are all members of a family known as Capsaicinoids.

Capsaicinoids are responsible for both the volatile and medicinal properties of hot peppers. While capsaicin is the pharmaceutical ingredient of choice used for a variety of pain treatments, this highly synthesized version lacks important properties found in the other capsaicinoids.

According to Wayne Perry, head of Research and Development for SiCap Industries, only a natural resin containing all major capsaicinoids can deliver the full medicinal power of hot peppers. Perry claims the natural resin from hot peppers can efficiently deliver both therapeutic and diagnostic drugs directly into the human body without systemic breakdown or adverse side effects.

"Our company has made great strides in the research of hot peppers. It all began in 2003 with our original hot pepper nasal spray, Sinus Buster - sinus and headache formula. Although there'd been some exciting research concerning capsaicin's ability to reduce headache pain and sinus inflammation, we couldn't figure out why Sinus Buster seemed to work so much better than other capsaicin nasal preparations used for research," says Perry.

After pouring over numerous studies and other products containing capsaicin, Perry realized the Sinus Buster formula utilized natural water soluble Oleoresin derived mainly from Cayenne pepper plants. While other formulations contained pharmaceutically synthesized capsaicin, SiCap's formula also included natural capsaicinoids found in hot peppers.

At that point, SiCap researchers turned their focus to capsaicinoids, and in 2006 the company applied for patents on a variety of medicinal applications utilizing them in specific combinations as a revolutionary intranasal drug delivery system. Perry discovered through experimentation that his new nasal spray was far more effective with a Steam Distilled water base which more closely matches the human body's own natural water molecules.

"Early on, we theorized that combined capsaicinoids could create permeability through the blood brain barrier when applied with a nasal spray. After experimenting for a couple years, we changed our original Sinus Buster formula in 2006, and then started creating an entire line of hot pepper nasal sprays based on this new discovery. We found that when you properly combine capsaicinoids, they create at least a 60% more efficient permeability through the blood brain barrier than capsaicin alone. The key is to combine the capsaicinoids and the right water molecules," says Perry.

This could be an important discovery with far more medical implications than simply relieving headaches and sinus problems. By creating "super-permeability" through the blood brain barrier (BBB), SiCap researchers have opened a new doorway to delivering a variety of therapeutic medicines into the human body. SiCap proposes this new technology could someday be used to deliver a host of drugs including cancer therapies, hormonal treatments, diagnostic formulations and numerous medicines to fight a variety of diseases.

While intranasal application of drugs is considered the most efficient of delivery methods, very few drugs can take advantage of this hidden doorway to the human body thanks to the Blood Brain Barrier, a term coined by medical researchers to explain the barrier that disrupts entry from the brain to the Central Nervous System (CNS) and the blood stream. While intranasal capsaicin has shown some promise in permeating the BBB, so has pulverized crustacean shells, particularly those from certain salt water dwelling snails. According to Wayne Perry, the key to efficient BBB permeability is through the intranasal application of capsaicinoids - not just capsaicin.

In 2006, SiCap Industries filed patents for each of their new Sinus Buster formulas, but they also combined the patents to incorporate their innovative intranasal drug delivery system using capsaicinoids derived from natural hot peppers. Wayne Perry believes this new capsaicinoid technology could go far beyond the intranasal delivery of therapeutic herbals to include many life saving pharmaceuticals.

"Our Sinus Buster allergy formula includes Nettle extract as an active ingredient, and research has shown that nettle not only relieves allergy symptoms, but it's also been shown to prevent reactions to allergy triggers. By combining the nettle with hot pepper capsaicinoids in a nasal spray, it's immediately soluble to the bloodstream and the central nervous system almost simultaneously thanks to the addition of distilled water.
