New York Food Festival Ripe with Locally Grown Organic Tomatoes

Tomato-philes will have ample opportunity to savor locally grown, organic, naturally farm ripened, vibrantly colored and bursting with flavor iterations of their favorite fruit Aug. 13 through Sept. 9 during the Second Annual Katchkie Tomato Festival, produced by Great Performances, the leading catering concern.

New York, NY (PRWEB) August 9, 2007 -- Tomato-philes will have ample opportunity to savor locally grown, organic, naturally farm ripened, vibrantly colored and bursting with flavor iterations of their favorite fruit Aug. 13 through Sept. 9 during the Second Annual Katchkie Tomato Festival (www.katchkiefarm.com/tomatofestival), produced by Great Performances (www.greatperformances.com), the leading catering concern. For the month-long food festival, the chefs at six of the New York City restaurants operated by Great Performances (GP) - Café Opaline, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, Garden Court Café, Mae Mae Café, Sotheby’s Café, and Wave Hill - will present tempting tomato centric dishes priced at $8 to showcase the 6,000 pound, multi-variety tomato crop from Katchkie Farm (www.katchkiefarm.com), GP’s new 60-acre organic farm in Kinderhook, NY.

Katchkie Farm Tomato Festival partakers will have the opportunity to sample the farm-to-table within 36-hours flavor and texture characteristics of nine different kinds of tomatoes - Sungold, Mountain Fresh, Cherokee Purple, San Marzano, Favorita, Primetime, Black Krim, Sunshine and Juliet. They will also receive a tomato primer describing the different varieties, outlining their best uses and offering recipes.

At Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, the glamorous jazz emporium located in Jazz at Lincoln Center, the tomato-thon will be represented by a first course of fried green tomatoes, herb goat cheese, crispy bacon, roasted tomato vinaigrette, while the peaceful sun drenched oasis that is the Asia Society’s Garden Court Café will offer pan fried organic tomatoes, pickled chanterelles, upland cress. And the stylish Café Opaline overlooking Madison Avenue from the second floor of the Dahesh Museum of Art will present chilled heirloom tomato gazpacho, basil oil.

The sleek Sotheby’s, the bucolic Wave Hill Café in the Bronx and Soho’s cozy Mae Mae Café will utilize the Katchkie Farm’s fruitful bounty for organic sungold tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella, basil vinaigrette, and brioche croutons. At Sotheby’s and Wave Hill, the colorful salad will be available as a takeout dish; it will serve as a first course at Mae Mae.

The $8 tomato treats will be available at their respective locations during normal operating hours from Aug. 13 through Sept. 9.

For information about the tomato festival participating restaurants’ hours and addresses, visit the www.katchkiefarm.com/tomatofestival or call the Tomato Hotline at (212) 727-2424.
