Seattle Software Company Sponsors Independent Media Project

Brain Murmurs, Inc, a Seattle-based software research and development company, is pleased to announce the launch of IMP, a new digital marketplace for independent music, books and film.
IMP is based on the following ideas

Seattle, WA (PRWEB) August 31, 2007 -- Brain Murmurs, Inc, a Seattle-based software research and development company, is pleased to announce the launch of IMP, a new digital marketplace for independent media.

In today's industry, musicians typically realize about 10 percent of the profits from CD sales of their music. Authors may make slightly more, but by and large it is the company that publishes and distributes the content that takes the lion's share of the profits. Alternatively, IMP provides artists with an online presence, free content hosting and 100 percent of the profits made from their content's sale at the site.

"IMP is based on the following ideas," said Brain Murmurs CEO Daniel Pasco, "that good art should be made easy to find, DRM is more trouble than it's worth, artists should be compensated fairly for their work and that this could be done in such a way that the venture could be self-sustaining without going after a share of the artists' sales revenue."

The IMP online community provides a space for artists to promote, distribute and sell their work. It currently supports music, books and video and is expected to accommodate visual arts shortly. IMP provides strong support for Creative Commons licensing in addition to traditional copyrighted works. BMI is particularly interested in supporting handheld eBook readers, such as the Sony Reader platform, and are providing additional resources to help artists produce works for them.

Users are provided with a very painless way to provide ratings for all of the content they buy or download. This rating data is used to determine the overall ranking of popular content within the site. IMP carries this further by giving artists an option to take part in a rating-determined pricing system: the higher the rating, the higher the price. This creates what the founders refer to as a "meritocratic community" where massive appeal translates directly to higher value.

Their mission statement is simple, says IMP's marketing director Erik Fleuter: "We want to make artists and art enthusiasts happy by offering something that is more than a website; it's a meritocracy, a soapbox and a place to find media that is truly good and truly independent. If you're looking for an alternative to iTunes for indie content or a better place than myspace to promote your work, IMP is the place for you. You can keep on using sites like MySpace as well, but we think that you'll find yourself steering people to your IMP site if you're interested in getting exposure and making money from your work."

You can visit the IMP website and share your feedback at http://imp.fm.
