National Preparedness Month: Survival Kits Online Encourages Everyone to Plan Ahead

Throughout the month, all Americans can take some simple steps to prepare themselves and their families for emergencies including getting a family emergency supply kit, making a family emergency plan, being informed about different threats and getting involved in preparing their communities.

Woodland Hills, CA (PRWEB) September 17, 2007 -- The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is working with a wide variety of public and private sector organizations to educate the public about the importance of emergency preparedness. http://www.SurvivalKitsOnline.com plans to release the latest preparedness materials on its website in hopes of encouraging people to take disaster preparedness seriously and to help make the process easier. There will be articles on the website targeting businesses, customers, employees and interested individuals.

Throughout the month, all Americans can take some simple steps to prepare themselves and their families for emergencies including getting a family emergency supply kit, making a family emergency plan, being informed about different threats and getting involved in preparing their communities.

"One of the simplest things you can do to be better prepared is to have a family emergency plan. To develop one, start with the basics," says Scott Kastner http://www.SurvivalKitsOnline.com.

Disaster plan
The disaster plan should include family, friends, neighbors, loved ones, significant others and co-workers. There must be a detailed plan. If evacuation from home, work, school or even the shopping mall, there must be a contingency plan that everyone is aware of. Gather emergency disaster preparedness supplies, survival kits and survival gear so that a good evaluation of what is available can be made.

Preparing children
Getting the children involved in a specific plan about their wellbeing will make them less afraid, less stressed, more informed and more confident they will be ok. They should know what the risks are but using simple terms and not over-explaining things is best.

People with special needs
Inform local fire departments, neighbors and friends of any special needs that any one of your family members may have. Get advice from the person's doctor for any specific needs.

Don't forget a plan for pets
Due to health regulations, most emergency shelters cannot house animals. Find out in advance how to care for pets and working animals when disaster strikes. Do not leave pets behind during an evacuation. Pet survival kits, survival packs and survival gear are available.

Practice the disaster plan
After sitting down with the people on your list, write a plan and practice it.

Everyone needs to be self-sufficient. There is the possibility of being on one's own until help arrives. Everyone should have a disaster kit with them. Planning for 72 hours is suggested, but this is a minimum amount of time.

Survival kits
Have enough survival kits, survival gear and emergency disaster supplies for each member of the household. Keep extra emergency disaster preparedness supplies and locate them in several different locations, such as inside the house and in the garage.

Purchase a survival kit for each automobile, for work, home and at each child's school. Pre-made survival kits and survival packs make it easier if evacuated or stranded away from home. There are kits and packs that cover every type of disaster including earthquakes, floods, fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, terrorist attacks, landslides, winter storms, tsunamis and bird flu.

"Remember, disasters come in many forms. Natural disasters can sometimes be predicted giving one enough time to evacuate. Other natural disasters happen suddenly without warning. Man-made disasters are unpredictable and mostly happen without warning. It is everyone's responsibility to become prepared with survival kits, survival packs and emergency disaster supplies."
