Reliability and Confidence Define a Nation of "It Girls": First "It Girl Essentials" Winner Named after National Search

The first in a series of winners of a nationwide search to identify real-life "It Girls" who embody confidence and reliability was announced today on www.thepill.com.

Raritan, NJ (PRWEB / PRWEB) August 19, 2008 -- The first in a series of winners of a nationwide search to identify real-life "It Girls" who embody confidence and reliability was announced today on www.thepill.com. As part of the Millennial generation, the finalists proved that intelligence, reliability, talent and a passion to serve, ranked as the top priorities for this much talked about group. The "It Girl Essentials" contest, sponsored by Ortho Women's Health & Urology™, maker of ORTHO TRI-CYCLEN® LO (norgestimate/ethinyl estradiol), was designed to recognize exceptional young women, between the ages of 18-24, whose interests range from politics to education, from social responsibility to personal health.

"We've all read about the infamous 'It Girls' - the young women whose time in the limelight is defined as much by their very public personal struggles, as by their achievements and accolades," said Jane Buckingham, national women's trend expert, author of 'The Modern Girl's Guide' series and judge in the national search. "However, the winners of the 'It Girl Essentials' contest exemplify a whole new generation of women who are concerned, active and effective in their communities and in their world."

Meet August's "It Girl": Nicoletta Bumbac - A Passionate Advocate for Children

Millennials have been labeled the first female-dominant generation in U.S. history, led by a female-majority in undergraduate institutions (1), as well as increasing voter turnout for single women ages 18-24 (2). Nicoletta Bumbac was selected as the first ORTHO TRI-CYCLEN® LO "It Girl" because she is a strong representation of how members of her generation are looking to make a positive impact in our world.

Born and raised in Queens, NY, by Romanian and Hungarian parents, Nicoletta is a 20-year-old student at the Global College of Long Island University. She has studied and worked in Costa Rica, Brazil, Japan and London and, in doing so, found her true passion in life: juvenile justice and children's rights. From building houses in Nicaragua to playing with street kids at a shelter in Brazil, Nicoletta is a devoted advocate for children all over the world and plans to pursue a graduate degree in International Human Rights Law.

"I am passionate about children's rights and about bringing that message to all corners of the world," said Nicoletta. "It is important for young women to be confident and realize how much they can affect the world if they put their mind to it. For these reasons, I am glad Ortho Women's Health & Urology™ is recognizing us real-life 'It Girls.'"

Additionally, Nicoletta and Jane Buckingham will be hosting a live Webinar about what it means to be an "It Girl" today on September 4th, 2008 at 4 pm. Log on to www.thepill.com to register.

The "It Girl" Search: The Judges Panel

Today's real-life "It Girls" come in all shapes and sizes, from all corners of the country and with a long list of accomplishments. To help sort through it all, an expert panel of judges was brought on board, each with her own unique perspective.

  • Jane Buckingham: Author of 'The Modern Girl's Guide' series
  • Dr. Mary Jane Minkin: OB-GYN and Clinical Professor at Yale University School of Medicine
  • Linda La Sala: Co-Founder, Girlawhirl.com
  • Joanna Stevens: Product Manager, ORTHO TRI-CYCLEN® LO
"Ortho Women's Health & Urology™ is dedicated to recognizing young, confident, reliable women who are leaders of their generation," said Joanna Stevens, Product Manager, ORTHO TRI-CYCLEN® LO. "The panel had a very difficult decision to make with hundreds of applications submitted. Many of these young women have accomplished so much already, and most are not even 25 yet."

Today's "It Girl" and ORTHO TRI-CYCLEN® LO

"It Girls" today have a million things going on in their lives - whether they are running a local food bank, lobbying for children's rights or starting their own business, they are moving a mile a minute and don't want anything to stand in their way.

"Traveling to a new country that you've never been to before is full of exciting adventures and challenges," said Nicoletta. "I've been taking ORTHO TRI-CYCLEN® LO for the past 3 years, and with the instability of traveling, it's crucial for me that my birth control is reliable."

Dr. Mary Jane Minkin, OB-GYN and Clinical Professor at Yale University School of Medicine, said Nicoletta's mindset is very similar to that of many of the young women she sees every day.

"As a doctor, I am glad to see that these women are taking the time to be aware of their birth control options," said Dr. Minkin. "With so much going on in their lives, a reliable birth control pill that may provide more predictable periods, as well as a low rate of breakthrough or unexpected bleeding is important. Women should talk with their healthcare professional about the best option for them."

About the Contest:
The "It Girl Essentials" contest kicked-off on May 14, 2008. Contestants were asked to submit an essay highlighting the issues they were passionate about and dedicated to, as well as their involvement in campus activities, nonprofit organizations and recent internships. ORTHO TRI-CYCLEN® LO "It Girls" were chosen based on their ability to communicate the essence of reliability, predictability and confidence. Starting today until December, the 5 winners will be announced monthly on thepill.com. For contest updates, all are invited to become fans of the "It Girl Essentials" Facebook and MySpace pages.

ORTHO TRI-CYCLEN® LO is indicated for the prevention of pregnancy in women who elect to use oral contraceptives as their method of contraception.
