Emmy Award Winning Producer Discovers 'The Next Spike Lee' On YouTube

New York, NY (PRWEB) January 3, 2008 -- Brooklyn born indie filmmaker Brian Evans is starting 2008 off with a bang as he gets the news that a Spike Lee parody he posted on YouTube has resulted in a deal for a reality project with two-time Emmy Award winning producer Sam Pollard.

Producer Sam Pollard doesn't spend much time on YouTube. However, after incessant calls and e-mails from writer/director/actor Brian Evans, he logged on, and one clip in particular grabbed Pollard's attention. It was a webisode of Faamous TV (pronounced Famous TV), a YouTube program that Evans created.
The 3-5 minute webisodes feature, among other things, comedic interviews between the host Faamous Williams and Mars Blackmon, the outrageous character Lee made famous in his directorial debut "She's Gotta Have It." In the clip, Evans plays both characters.

Evans began e-mailing links to his show out to several people, one of which happened to be Oscar nominated producer Sam Pollard. Pollard has worked closely with Spike for years and recently won two Emmy Awards in 2007 for his work as producer on Lee's HBO documentary "When The Levees Broke."
"In the Mars Blackmon hat and glasses he really looked like Spike," said Pollard. "The clip really made me laugh. (Evans) definitely has talent." That clip scored him a meeting, which later lead to Pollard screening a DVD of Evans' $39,000 feature, "Get Faamous."*

In Spike-esque fashion, Evans wore several hats on the film, taking on the roles of writer, director, producer and editor in addition to playing the lead role. "He knows where to put a camera. (Evans) can direct, and has real skill as an actor. And when I found out what he shot (the film) for, it let me know he has a pretty good handle on producing as well," says Pollard.
Evans obviously made an impression. This February, Pollard will begin producing "Getting Faamous," a reality project that will follow Evans during the weeks leading up to a huge screening event for his film "Get Faamous" in L.A., an event Evans hopes will launch his film career.
It's unclear whether the doc will stay a single film, or be broken up into episodes for a reality series. "Mr. Pollard and I have been meeting with networks and distribution companies about where to take it, and the response has been great," says Evans.
Taking on the title "The Next Spike Lee," even as a joke, leaves Evans with huge shoes to fill. Is he up to the challenge? "I don't think it's really about filling his shoes, but more about doing good work. Spike's a hero of mine. He's the reason I started making films. The best way I can pay homage to him is to light the big screen up with quality films that might inspire some ten year old kid to pick up a camera and one day make films of his own. That would be incredible," Evans said.
