Academy Film School Alumna Ashvini Bhave Produces and Stars in Kadachit

Academy of Art University film school graduate Ashvini Bhave is the producer and star of Kadachit, a movie that is a sweeping sensation in India.

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) January 11, 2008 -- Academy of Art University film school graduate Ashvini Bhave is the producer and star of Kadachit, a movie that is a sweeping sensation in India.

Kadachit ("Perhaps") is a psycho-thriller directed by Chandrakant Kulkarni. After a 10-year hiatus from the silverscreen, Bhave returns in the lead role as a neurosurgeon who is also a loving mother and wife. The movie has garnered rave reviews for its story and the stunning performances by the actors.

Producing is the raw experience - you experience all parts of the process
Indian movie star Bhave has starred in at least 45 Bollywood and Marathi. She decided to take a break from acting after she got married and moved to San Francisco. She realized that it was the perfect time to follow a dream she had for many years: to work behind the camera.

"I had time on my hands and I wanted to utilize it understanding the industry I loved so much," she recalled.

When Bhave began film classes in the Academy of Art University's BFA program, her fellow classmates and instructors had no idea that she was a seasoned movie star in India. She described the experience of going from a famous actress to a student as "humbling."

"Being a student is the best thing you can do for yourself," Bhave said.

Bhave's concentration was in Producing and she benefited significantly from Academy instructor Curran Engel's classes. The classes helped her come out of the actor's mindset and get into the mindset of a producer. She learned to respect all of the technical sides of filmmaking - even more so than when she was in front of the camera.

"I had dreamed of a film unit that would be completely dedicated to making a good product," she said. "Being a producer allowed me to achieve my dream."

After receiving her BFA from the Academy, Bhave had two children and took some time off to raise her children. She returned to the industry with Kadachit and took on the roles of both producer and actress. Since she felt distant from the film industry, she thought that producing would be the best way to jump back into it.

"Producing is the raw experience - you experience all parts of the process," she said.

Kadachit is about the perception of truth, she explains. People have different perceptions of any major incident in life. The film asks what is the ultimate truth and what should one carry forward about their lives. It is also a study in deep interpersonal relationships. Bhave describes Kadachit as having a very unique style of narration and that it plays out like a psychological thriller.

The film has done extremely well in India, particularly in the Mumbai vicinity, selling out every weekend since it opened in October. Bay Area audiences will soon have the opportunity to see the film when it screens in San Jose and San Francisco at the end of February.
