Munich Philharmonic Turns Heads With Surprise Programming of "Frozen in Time" By Avner Dorman

Munich Philharmonic, led by conductor Juraj Valcuha, presents Avner Dorman's Frozen in Time only seven weeks after its world premiere in Hamburg, featuring percussion soloist Martin Grubinger on January 24, 25, and 26, 2008 at Philharmonie im Gasteig.

New York, NY (PRWEB) January 14, 2008 -- The Munich Philharmonic, whose recent music directors include Christian Thielemann, James Levine, and Sergiu Celibidache, will present a brand new percussion concerto by 32 year-old Israeli composer Avner Dorman only seven weeks after its world premiere at the Hamburg Philharmoniker. The piece, Frozen in Time will be performed by the Munich Philharmonic, led by conductor Juraj Valcuha and featuring percussion soloist Martin Grubinger, on January, 24, 25 and 26, 2008 at Philharmonie im Gasteig at 8:00pm. The other pieces on the program are Mozart's Overture to The Marriage of Figaro and Ravel's Daphnis and Chloé.

Frozen in Time, received its world premiere on December 2, 2007 by the young Austrian percussionist Martin Grubinger and the Hamburg Philharmoniker conducted by Simone Young, and was received enthusiastically by audiences and critics alike with standing ovations. Die Welt noted the composition's "rhythmic, bizarre jazz, hard grooves and unbroken drive" and praised it as "a piece that exceeds expectations to the extreme." The Hamburger Abendblatt commended Martin Grubinger for his "superior achievement that lent tremendous drive and excitement to Dorman's music."

Avner Dorman has quickly risen to become one of Israel's most successful renowned composers. His works have been commissioned and performed by leading orchestras and ensembles such as the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Zubin Mehta, The Hamburg Philharmoniker, the UBS Verbier Festival Orchestra, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and the Tanglewood Music Center. At the age of 25, he was the youngest composer to receive Israel's Prime Minister's Award and has since received several prestigious international awards. In 2006, an album of Dorman's piano music was released by Naxos to critical acclaim. A graduate of the Tel-Aviv University, Dorman holds a Doctorate in musical composition from the Juilliard School where he studied with John Corigliano. In Israel, he was a student of Josef Bardanashvili. Dorman's catalogue, published exclusively by G. Schirmer, Inc. includes concert music, as well as music for dance and film.
