In New Book, Author Calls for Global School Lunch Program to Fight Child Hunger

Invoking the same spirit that fueled the Marshall Plan to rebuild Europe, author and historian William Lambers calls for a global school lunch program to fight child hunger. Mr. Lambers has released a new book titled "The Spirit of the Marshall Plan: Taking Action Against World Hunger, School Lunches for Kids Around the World."

Cincinnati, OH (PRWEB) January 17, 2008 -- Invoking the same spirit that fueled the Marshall Plan to rebuild Europe, author and historian William Lambers calls for a global school lunch program to fight child hunger. Mr. Lambers has released a new book titled "The Spirit of the Marshall Plan: Taking Action Against World Hunger, School Lunches for Kids Around the World."

There are 300 million children who suffer from hunger worldwide. School lunch programs fight child hunger and also boost school attendance and performance. The book highlights the use of school lunch programs in Europe following World War II and how they can be used today in countries like Afghanistan, Kenya, Guatemala and Sudan. The future of these nations depends on a nourished and educated youth. Special attention is given to the work of charities such as Food for the Poor, Childslife International and the World Food Program.

Supporting the U.S. government McGovern-Dole Food for Education program is seen as key to ensuring every child around the globe can receive a school lunch. McGovern-Dole helps fund the work of the World Food Program (WFP), Catholic Relief Services, World Vision and other organizations that carry out school lunch programs in developing countries.

The Congress will be deciding the fate of the McGovern-Dole program in the upcoming Farm Bill conference. The House of Representatives voted last summer to give McGovern-Dole mandatory funding thereby increasing its annual budget from 100 million to 300 million over the next five years. The Senate decided to give McGovern-Dole discretionary funding in its version of the Farm Bill with no certainty of budget increases. The House and Senate have to come to agreement on McGovern-Dole and other issues as they finalize the Farm Bill. For more information about McGovern-Dole visit the Friends of the World Food Program web site at www.friendsofwfp.org.
The Friends offer a free e-newsletter called Food for Thought which contains updates on the McGovern-Dole legislation and hunger issues around the globe.

"The Spirit of the Marshall Plan: Taking Action Against World Hunger, School Lunches for Kids Around the World" is available for 3.00 retail from Amazon.com, Barnesandnoble.com and other bookstores. An article about material in the book is published on the History News Network (HNN) site at http://www.hnn.us/articles/46560.html
