But just how much more does a Belgian pay for his electricity compared to a Bulgarian, or a Spaniard compared to a Finn? "For months we received e-mail from people asking us about prices of energy in European countries," says Corine Treffers of Energy.eu, "Most of this data is available at European institutions, but they are quite difficult to interpret. For example, Natural Gas prices are measured in Gigajoule instead in cubic meters or kilowatt-hour. What we did is translate this data and make it comprehensible to people within the blink of an eye."
The huge differences in EU energy prices reveal the need for more competition between energy companies. The European Commission's decision to 'unbundle' energy companies, meaning they cannot own both power plants and distribution networks, is an important step towards increased competition and should lead to lower consumer prices.
"By publishing the energy prices of the twenty-seven EU member states, and updating this data as soon as new figures are available, we keep the European audience aware and help push the public opinion towards a more transparent energy market." says Michael Zwanenburg, CEO of Energy.eu.
