South Bend, IN (PRWEB) March 7, 2008 -- Greg Pattillo, an accomplished classical flutist who became an overnight YouTube™ phenomenon by creating his own distinctive style of beatbox* music, will demonstrate his unique talents at the Woodwind and Brasswind on March 18. wo years ago, Pattillo was packing groceries eight hours a day in New York City, and practicing flute in the subway stations. Today, he ranks on the YouTube Top 100 all-time list of visited sites. Over 23 million viewers have watched him create hip-hop beatbox music with his flute, starting with his first video, where he plays the theme from the Super Mario Brothers video games. "This unique beatbox style was developed by combining classical techniques learned at the Cleveland Institute of Music, with practical experience as a member of Collaborative Arts Insurgency, a street performing group in San Francisco," according to Gene Semmelhack, Director of Marketing for Woodwind & Brasswind. "He learned how to blend his instrumental renderings of classical, jazz and hip-hop music with performance poetry and folk music."

Pattillo will perform solo and with his trio, Project, to demonstrate the kind of fun and ex-citement that can be created by playing the flute
"Pattillo will perform solo and with his trio, Project, to demonstrate the kind of fun and ex-citement that can be created by playing the flute," adds Semmelhack. "His music will take us from popular hip-hop to classical Bach, with a mix of jazz included." As part of the program, a 'how-to' clinic will be conducted by Pattillo, and students are encouraged to bring their flutes.

Since being discovered on YouTube, Pattillo has performed across the United States and even in Europe. Pattillo and the Project trio are being brought to the Michiana area, under the spon-sorship of Gemstone Musical Instruments of Elkhart, marketer of the Brio flutes played by Pattillo. During his visit to the area, Pattillo and his trio will perform at six Concord District schools on March 17 and 18.

"Not only is Greg a creative professional musician, but he is a 'natural' at teaching kids," notes Mark Hutchens, Vice President of Marketing for Gemstone Musical Instruments makers of Gemeinhardt flutes. "Greg holds bachelor's and master's degrees from the Cleveland Institute of Music, where he was a student of Joshua Smith, the principal flutist of the Cleveland Orchestra. In fact, he credits much of his ability to create the beatbox sounds with a flute, from the Dalcroze method of classical music training which he learned at the Cleveland Institute of Music."

This event is only one of many scheduled by Woodwind & Brasswind in their 30th Anniversary Performance Series. The company, which boasts one of the largest showrooms of musical in-struments under a single roof, has grown to become one of the world's largest direct marketers of musical instruments. Acquired a year ago by Musician's Friend, Inc., Woodwind & Brasswind continues to operate as an independent division, and currently employs approximately 200 people in the South Bend area.

*For the uninformed, beatbox music is the art of vocal percussion, often associated with the hip-hop culture, that mimics the sound of acoustic or electric drum sets through amplified sounds which are created by one's mouth, lips, tongue, voice, or flute -- as in the case of Greg Pattillo.
