Several studies have indicated that parabens--preservatives that are widely used in cosmetics, bath, and body products--can cause health hazards, including lymphoma and breast cancers. The FDA does not currently regulate parabens. Until this issue is properly researched and regulated, Sonya Dakar products will no longer contain parabens.

Sulfates--compounds that act as detergents in cleansing products--are also under scrutiny. These foaming agents strip the skin of its natural oils, causing skin irritations among those who are routinely exposed to the compound.

"Our decision to re-formulate our face washes is the first step in making the entire Sonya Dakar Collection paraben-free and sulfate-free," says Sonya Dakar, company founder and esteemed aesthetician. The re-formulated washes are now supplemented with natural (non-paraben) preservatives derived from corn fermentation or preservatives that are found in everyday food items. The formulations' other components draw from nourishing ingredients such as sugar cane, coconut, and sweet almond oil.
