The village of Alter do Chão is renown for the Royal Stud Farm--the Coudelaria Real--where the first attempts to restore the Lusitanian breed of horse took place beginning in 1748. Today the Alter Real breed is much admired in the high school of equestrian enthusiasts. The Alter do Chão Professional Farming College is also situated here.
In addition to its equestrian history, Alter do Chão is known for its Roman ruins, which can be seen in the public baths, called Ferragial d'El Rei, and a bridge at Vila Formosa. The castle here was built in 1359 by King Dom Pedro I in 1359.
Each session of the Congress will be presented in English, French, German, Portuguese and Spanish. The Congress will feature discussions of global equestrian tourism efforts, coordinated planning of equestrian events and trends in equestrian tourism from leaders in the industry. Each day of the Congress, visitors can see exhibitions by riders from the Portuguese School of the Equestrian Art in the palace gardens.
