WE Festival is a multi-day, totally DIY, volunteer-run music festival that always takes place the week before and during Memorial Day weekend in Wilmington, NC. WE Festival was started in 1996 as a response to all of the other over-hyped, growingly corporate music festivals. Kenyata Sullivan, co-founder, organizer and Wilmington native, has been carrying this tradition of non-corporate, extremely independent attitude throughout the years. Past performers of WE Festival include The Dismemberment Plan, Mooney Suzuki, and Lamb of God, all before they became nationally recognized in the music scene. This year's WE Festival takes place on May 22-26. For more information please visit, www.wefestival.com.
In addition to putting on WE Fest every year, Sullivan fronts the renowned art punk getup, The Majestic Twelve. Their second record, Schizophrenology has surpassed 50,000 downloads so far, quite a feat for a completely DIY music group. Sullivan is currently writing and recording songs for the untitled third Majestic Twelve album due in the fall of '08 and was recently commissioned to write a book about his experiences in the underground music scene to be released sometime in the future. For more information on Sullivan and The Majestic Twelve, visit www.themajestictwelve.com.
