FleetCards USA Responds to Trucker Protest Resulting From Rising Gas Prices

With the cost of fuel rising to astronomical heights, Independent Truck drivers are reportedly parking their trucks and going to work for somebody else.

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) April 3, 2008 -- With the cost of fuel rising to astronomical heights, Independent Truck drivers are reportedly parking their trucks and going to work for somebody else.

Although gas prices have increased in the past two months, diesel fuel costs have grown much faster, by 18 percent. This is an increase that many truckers simply cannot pass on to their customers.

If I have a major breakdown on a truck, an engine or a transmission, I won't have enough money to fix it.
"The big trucking companies buy a lot of fuel and get a discount, but the little guy doesn't," said Tracy Reinke, a Stillwater-based independent trucker. "If I have a major breakdown on a truck, an engine or a transmission, I won't have enough money to fix it."

Large trucking firms are also being hit hard by the high fuel prices, said Tiffany Wlazlowski, a spokeswoman for American Trucking Association, an Arlington, Va., trade organization for the larger members of the trucking industry.

"Trucking companies operate on a 3 to 4 percent gross profit margin," Tiffany said. "While fuel historically is their second-highest cost after labor, it has become the top expense."

There is little that truckers can do to offset this price increase.

Some drivers are trying to work additional hours to make enough money to pay for the additional cost of fuel.

Other truckers are seeking corporate solutions such as FleetCards USA .

"FleetCards USA offers a selection of fuel cards that can help any fleet business get a handle on their operating expenses," says Mike Noles, President, FleetCards USA. "Our fleet card brands have extensive contracts with different fueling operators ensuring that customers receive choice and flexibility when choosing their fleet card."

"Fleet cards also help companies monitor each vehicle in their fleet's fuel economy," says Noles. "If you have a large fleet under your purview, it can sometimes be hard to monitor the exact economy of each vehicle."

Finding a way to manage fuel costs for fleet organizations is one of FleetCards USA's primary concerns.
