Artocracy.org Receives International Recognition with Oscar of the Internet

Spokane-based Artocracy.org has been named one of the top five art websites by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences in its annual recognition of Internet excellence.

Spokane, WA (PRWEB) April 15, 2008 -- Spokane-based Artocracy.org has been named one of the top five art websites by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences in its annual recognition of Internet excellence.

Artocracy.org, a digital marketplace for original art, was among five art websites to be nominated for the academy's 2008 "Webby Award," dubbed "the Oscars of the Internet" by the New York Times. The other art websites nominated are: The National Gallery of Art, artist Stephen Ensminger, The Museum of Modern art and The National Palace. Winners will be announced on May 6, 2008 and honored at a star-studded gala in New York City on June 10.

The Webby Awards honors the outstanding work that is setting the standards for the Internet
The awards are judged by the International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences, a global organization that includes David Bowie, Virgin Group founder Richard Branson, AKQA Global Creative Director Rei Inamoto, "Simpsons" creator Matt Groening, Huffington Post founder Arianna Huffington, Real Networks CEO Rob Glaser, and The Weinstein Company's Harvey Weinstein. Webby Award categories include websites, interactive advertising, online film & video, and mobile websites.

Artocracy.org was selected from nearly 10,000 entries from more than 60 countries and all 50 states. "The Webby Awards honors the outstanding work that is setting the standards for the Internet," said David-Michel Davies, executive director of The Webby Awards. "Artocracy's Nominee selection is a testament to the skill, ingenuity, and vision of its creators."

Through its professionally curated virtual gallery, Artocracy.org allows patrons to view and purchase high quality, affordable art and provides exposure and income for artists. Artocracy.org founder Megan Murphy hopes the recognition will further build awareness for Artocracy.org and the artists it supports.

"I am beyond grateful for the nomination and hope it allows individuals to understand that living with quality art is within everyone's reach," said Murphy.

Murphy, an artist herself, says, "The recognition of Artocracy.org by The Annual Webby Awards, and to be in the company of the other nominees, is truly empowering to artists whose work is often times difficult to be shown or supported." Artocracy.org was designed by 2 x 4 in New York, NY, built by Seven -2 in Spokane and copy was written by Matt Samelson of Denver, CO.

As a nominee for a Webby Award, Artocracy.org is also eligible to win a People's Voice Award. People's Voice voting, sponsored by Nokia, is open to the public from April 8 to May 1 at http://pv.webbyawards.com. There the public will be able to choose who they feel should take home top honors.

Since January 2005 Artocracy.org, a virtual art gallery, has connected artist and patrons through the sale of affordable art. Featuring talented artists, Artocracy.org presents artwork in a high quality digital format. Digital art can be downloaded with prices ranging US $20 - $50 for individual prints. Artists benefit from exposure and sales of their work. Customers can peruse a variety of artistic styles from artists around the world. The wide selection of art allows all art lovers the opportunity to own original art. By purchasing art from Artocracy consumers can affordably personalize their home or office with unique works of art and support current and future generations of artists.
